Gonna be headed to Canyon Lake this weekend to try and do some bass fishing. Never fished the lake before. Anyone have any ideas on where to start and maybe some general areas that have any sort of numbers for bass?

I realize the weather doesn't look so good. So plan B might be to drive to the base of the dam and try to catch some trout. Any ideas on what baits might produce some rainbow trout?

hey kyle, That is a tough lake for sure.. you will have definitely need to downsize. A dropshot, shakey head, or senko may be the ticket. That being said you may have your best luck bed fishing. That is typically a super clear lake, however the lake over the last year has come up to full pull from record low water levels so it may not be as clear but if it is clear I would be bed fishing.

Canyon Lake provides a variety of bass fishing options. There are a lot of flooded bushes, trees to flip, rock walls/canyons, marinas, and brush piles put out by Texas parks and wildlife. The bottom end of the lakes has some nice smallmouth (near the dam and the main lake points near there) and the upper end usually has more largemouth, though I have caught both in several different parts of the lake. My last trip to the lake produced lots of small bass with a few keeper sized mixed in. I like to fish shallow so I usually focus on the large coves that are mid lake and up towards the the river.

My experience with the trout below the dam is that they are caught very quickly from when they are stocked and with the last stocking having been reported as 3/3/16 there may not be many left if any at all. If you do want to try your luck with them I have had good success with Berkley 3' trout worms , with pink being my favorite color.

I'll be out on Canyon lake this weekend with my family (Friday and Saturday) and my bass club, Canyon Bass Club of San Marcos, will be there Sunday and Monday to help add brush piles to the lake. I just uploaded a map and coordinates of the brush piles at BassEditor.com.

Is it beneficial to fish with the lightest line of flurocarbon possible? 8 lb max?

Thank you guys for all your hard work.

As far as clarity, the lake is no longer clear. It is full of nutrients and has a greenish tint to most of it. There is still clearish water down by the damn. We've been fipping trees with 16-20lb flouro. On a drop shot we are throwing on 8lb flouro, but for everything else it's 15-20lb for soft plastics and jigs.
