I have been doing a lot of fly fishing below Lake Somerville dam for white bass, hybrids and crappie. The small mouth buffalo stack up thick below the dam. In the evenings they will chase shad and be jumping out of the water like largemouth bass. Twice during the last month I have had them take a fly. Both times it was pulling the fly slowly across a submerged sand bar. I'm using a slow sinking bead chain clouser that remains suspended in the water column when I pull it over the shallow sand bar. I caught a 5.9 lber last month that I registered for a Yegua Creek fly rod record. Then I caught a 29.5 inch, 14.1 lber on my 4 weight fly rod this weekend. I am submitting paperwork for a new record this week.

Thanks Fitz and Chuck
Yes Chuck, it was a battle. I was using 6 lb. tippet on my 4 weight rod so bullying him in wasn't an option. I had to let him run 3 times. Then when I finally got him up on the edge of the sand bar he tried to run again so I had to jump on top of him, LOL. Pulled the fly from his mouth and drug him up on the bank.

Chase shad??? usually when spooked they will run across the top, and or when spawning or just for fun. If they are chasing shad it wouldn't be to eat them

They were all over the shallows jumping and they actually eat the fly so I assumed that this is what they were doing as well.

The other night a spooked up about an eight pounder and he rocketed up on the bank. I have also had them smack the boat. I would say i'm jealous, I would love to catch one on the fly.
