So I go to the lake today looking for a shallow bite with this heavy overcast. No top water bite what so ever. But I did find a good crank bait bite in 4 to 6 feet of water. As I’m flipping a two pound bass in the boat, the bait comes unbutton and hits my hand. As I reach down to grab the bass, I noticed that the bait is stuck to my hand. Boy was it stuck, two of the treble hooks got me good. I tried to get them out, but I couldn’t get them to budge. So pack it in with the bait still in hand. Load the boat up and an angler pulls into the boat slip to load his boat. I asked if he would help me out by cutting the hook lose from the bait. So all is good and drive home, unhook the boat, make a pot of coffee, drink a cup and then go to ER to get them removed.
Today was not my day. But at least I got the crank bait dialed in, I was on a good bite.

Drove home with the treble hook in hand.

After I got home, I took some pliers with the cutting edge on end and snipped the hooks apart. Made a pot of coffee and had a cup before going to ER.

And this is how I leave the ER with a small bandage. Thank God for numbing meds. They were able to pull them out rather than cut them out.

Sounds like your attitude made a big difference in the outcome. Hope you recover quickly and make it back out sooner then later.

It's all good this morning, it's not even sore. I am ready to get after it again. Trying to remove something like this with one hand is almost impossible.

At times like these I'm glad to be using a de-barded hook. They sure come out easier.

I fun fish for blacks, so I should smash all the barbs. Catch and release, remove barbs......

It didn't take a whole lot of those treble hooks to get stuck but good in my hand before I got me a Fish Grip. I have several of them scattered around my boat now along with pliers. Y'all go ahead and be cool. Those things hurt.

Glad you're ok though Fishytx.

Multiple fish grips in the boat = a lot cheaper than an ER trip for trebles, too.

This had nothing to do with removing the bait from the fish. As I was flipping the fish in the boat, the crank bait came unhooked from the fish. The fish landed on my deck, but the crank bait flew right into my hand on the pole. It was a freak accident is all. But I hate fishing with baits that have treble hooks. I would rather worm fish with one hook. I'm always on edge removing treble hooks. I have had fish shake and hook me while they're still hooked up. That is the worse thing ever let me tell you. I probably get hooked a few times a year, but I've never had two get me like this.

Yep. Me too. The front hook on a rattle trap clean through, the fish still shaking on the rear hook. And it happened in a flash - before I even tried to grab him. My cousin had some pliers and managed to squeeze the barb flat while I held the fish. Yep. That hurts.

Has happened to me more then once. Never figured out the line trick. But seems the least damaging way to get a hook out is push the barbs out and cut the barbs off.

Or smash the barbs to begin with when ever you are out doing the catch and release thing. I have plenty of baits, three of everything, just the way I buy baits.
