I'd like to be able to get some glitter on my jig heads that stands out. Specifically, much like the Oldham jig and spinnerbait heads. Here's a bad pic but all I could find online:



I've tried powder coating with the powder bed and then dipping the heads into glitter but they end up dull looking. I've tried mixing glitter into powder and same result. I've tried dipping in clear coat and dusting the heads with glitter. They still come out dull looking and not nearly as sparkly as the Oldham stuff. Anyone have any ideas?

Let me say that when I just use powder coating and then cure in the oven the jigs turn out great and the heads are shiny. Add glitter to the formula and it doesnt give that sparkle and pop like I'm after. Any tips?

Edit: I've used glitter from lure parts online as well as hobby lobby. Is there a special glitter to use?

Get some Devcon 2500 lb 30 minute clear epoxy. Mix the glitter into the epoxy and coat the head with it.

is the glitter you using heat resistant?

Kens3313 is onto something here. Some glitter will lose its color under heat or when in contact with solvents. I don't use powder coats so I'm speaking of glitter and paints or finishes applied over paints. When I paint a jig or spinner I use a clear gloss with micro fine clitter and finish coat with 2 part epoxy. Not sure why powder coat is the preferred finish on jigs and spinnerbaits?? Maybe someone on this forum could explain.

Inexpensive, easy to apply and very durable.

I have used some plain glitter from Hobby Lobby that I'm sure is not heat resistant. I've also used CS Coatings' glitter with the CS Seal-Coat Lure Finish.



In my experience (very limited), the powder coating (in a powder bed) and a two stage bake has been the most durable finish. Its ETREMELY durable. Like mentioned, I've tried a S Coating Seal-Coat that wasn't nearly as resistant to chipping.

Admittedly, I haven't tried the epoxy yet. I'll order some now and report back.

To get that heavy glitter on the belly of the jig, do not mix the glitter in with the epoxy. Simply paint the epoxy on with a small brush, then touch the bait to a small pile of glitter. Let it dry for the 30 minutes to set up a little so it doesn't move around then brush on a another coat over the glitter and entire bait.

Will give that a try. Epoxy should be here next week sometime.

I tried some glittery finger nail polish and I'm getting close to what I'm after, but not quite as much covered as I'd like and I don't think finger nail polish is going to be very durable.

This is what I'm after:

I always remove the eye and replace with a 3D eye in the color I like. While the eye is out coat the head with epoxy, try not to get any in the eye socket. I clean it with a Dremel ball bit anyway before inserting a new eye. I just use my fingers to keep sprinkling on the glitter until it is coated thick. Do this over a piece of paper then you can save the unused glitter that falls away.

I tried adding glitter to slip head jigs last year. Painted the heads black then brushed on a light coat of epoxy then sprinkled blue glitter on using Donald's method. Worked great. Just be sure to add the second coat of epoxy or the finish will be gritty and tend to hang up on wood cover.

Update: The epoxy has been helpful. I wouldn't say it gave me exactly what I wanted, but combined with a few other tricks I think it will be a great final coat. Only thing left to do is test the durability on the water as well as dropping a few lures on the driveway to see if they chip/flake.

Mr Harper is correct about not mixing glitter in epoxy (or other coatings). It just doesn't work well.

I've put epoxy on....then taken a salt shaker with glitter in it and "salted" the jig or spinnerbait head....

The big problem with glitter is the way it sometimes won't lay flat on the surface of the painted pattern. It leaves a semi rough surface when the glitter dries edge up. Try using the spray on glitter mix from Folk Art. Its a micro glitter, sprays pretty well and lays flat 98% of the time. Paint your pattern or base color, spray on the glitter mix of your choice, use a soft brush to remove any glitter that may have dried edge up then use epoxy to seal the pattern. Works great most of the time.
