My 25Hp tohatsu 4-stroke oil level becomes over full after about four months of running and the oil looks very black. What might be the cause of this?

It has to be gas or water. Drain it into a clear container and see if water settles to the bottom.

No. You either have gas leaking by the rings or you have water from cooling system getting in it. Change your oil into a clear container and look at it. Water will go to the bottom and your oil will likely be milky. You will smell it if it's gas. When you refill do not overfill. Once full any addition can look more pronounced, imagine the neck of a bottle.

Would it help if after each run I let the motor run dry of gas ?

After draining your oil when you go to refill look up the wet capacity of your motor, it will be a little less than dry. An ounce over on that small motor is going to make a big difference on your stick.

Dawson I fill it, then crank it, and check the oil with the filter full but about three weeks into the change oil is already coming out the top of the dipstick hole.

Did you drain the oil into a glass container as was suggested 8 posts back to determine if you are getting water or gas in the oil? Unless you are a pretty handy mechanic, the cure is going to be to have a shop fix it anyway. We've given you the two only probabilities. The longer you run that motor with diluted oil, the closer you get to a repower.

Bob I did drain the oil no water that i could tell but I have only ran it a couple of times on the new oil change. I did notice the old oil seemed thin and extra black.

Do you do a lot of trolling? If your motor is running too cold from an open thermostat then it will not burn all of the fuel and the residual fuel will go to the crankcase! This is not a good thing because it has diluted your oil. If it were water in the oil it would be white.
