Hello,
I'm interested in catching gar (any species, doesn't matter to me.) I live in Carrollton, close to Lake Lewisville and other fishing hot spots. However, I am very new to the realm of gar fishing. Anyone got any tips on where to fish for gar from the bank?

They usually start showing up in the creeks about this time of year.

Pretty soon you will be able to find them in Rowlett Creek.

Below the dam on any lake is usually the best spot.

I don't know if you can access it anymore but where the Elm Fork and West Fork Trinity meets used to be the hot spot for big gator gar. Been many over a hundred pounds caught right there. I know of one that went 160. There was a time when you could drive right to it off of Shady Grove Rd in Irving.
Another place would be at California Crossing levy but I wouldn't go there at night or any other time without carrying concealed. Lot of bad apples been hanging out there lately.
I like running water for gar fishing. I think the bait smell brings them in faster.
From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."
Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Henrietta Hole on Denton creek is full of gar right now. It's a long walk but I did see a bank fisherman in there on Friday.

Sam Houston Park off of 635 in the backflow area where the trail crosses it always has them when the water is high like this. Also have seen them at california crossing almost every time there. Any spot on the Trinity that has a branch off, slack water, etc will probably have gar.
