Figured I'd show y'all some of my stone hooks, knapped from river gravel and various chert rocks.

They will catch fish, you just got to haul em in quick and give them no slack. Ya can't smack the side of the boat or hang a barbed wire fence on the back of a cast because they will break.
They hold a suprising amount of weight applied directly to the point. Like I've tested several up to fifteen pounds and they didn't break, and some of the smaller ones I've pulled to ten pounds in tests.

The last one is a stone hook jig with natural fiber skirt, and the strings are made of sinew.

Going fishing tomorrow, be back Friday night

That looks like it is a painfully slow process, even more so than an arrow head. I admire your skill and patience! I like the last one! Just curious, how many hours do you have into the last one?

Thanks,

Huckleberry, It took about an hour to knap the jig then another thirty minutes to put the skirt on.
The sinew string takes forever to make, by time the sinew is processed prepared and braided its taken about two hours per foot of string.

If things go smoothly, I can knap a hook in as little as thirty minutes

Thanks,
I cried more than I cussed on a few of the ones that broke.
When I first started making them I was trying to make them with really small shank diameters and would break them nearly finished, and it would hurt my little feelings.

Then I got to where I thought they just had to have a barb near the point and broke several trying to flake the barb area.

I've broken so many by now that it's no big deal anymore when one breaks, but I don't break very many anymore either, so I'm past the point of getting frustrated and just have fun making them now.

I have more to post but have very little extra time lately with work and Mom in the hospital.
I'll get some more posted soon and hopefully some video of one in action dragging bass up on the bank.

I bet you could use feather or hair and dress it up nice enough to catch a bass

Oh MAN! What a week!
My mom's doing better now, but I feel like I been chewed up by a mountain lion and crapped over the side of a cliff.
I need fishing therapy real bad, but I'm too tired out to even fish right now.

You're right Jaret, I made a feather jig once and it sank perfectly horizontal at a fairly slow rate and was gonna be deadly, but I broke it doing a strength test and trying to take a picture of the scale readings pulling on the hook point. It had pulled fifteen pounds but I was using a leather sling that would stretch and let the weight drop so I pulled it farther to let the scales settle to fifteen pounds for the pic and it snapped.
I've lost most of the pics in a puter crash but I have a couple of fish caught on stone hooks with a wacky rigged Zoom centipede I think I can get off a website where I had posted them once, but this is all I have until I can go fish them and get some more pics.
