I bought the Lowrance Hook 4. I have been using the split screen. My question is, dose it read 20° straight down or 20° to one side. I know it's a cone but which way does it read? I went after work yesterday and went right through some thick timber and couldn't tell which side I was looking at. It was awesome seeing the structure. The screen was clear. Also it seemed the faster I went the clearer the picture was.

Thanks for the help and information.

Straight down. Leaningpost can explain all you need to know about it.

No it is not a cone. It is a vertical plane.

You'll want to use 455hz for a wider cone. That's what I use when I'm looking for structure and fish. It also makes the fish a bit more obvious. I use 800hz if I want to get a really good image of exactly what the structure is. You can see fish on 800hz but remember it's a much smaller cone and is not going to show you all of the fish that may be hanging around the pile. Also, make sure you're going about 3.5 mph for the best image.

This^^^^^

Down scan takes a slice from under the transducer. It is wide left to right, but thin front to back if that makes sense. By taking several slices and a good 2-4 mph boat speed it gives those good detailed images.

I did learn that the faster I went the better the picture!
Thanks

My next question is, what's the lag time or delay fro scan to graph? How far past something will I be before it shows up on the screen?

Thanks

My HDSI transducer on my 899 is in line with the bottom of my boat and a 1/4" below. At slow speeds my nose is up so when I first see stuff on screen,it's in line with transducer. I think you can adjust graph speeds as well so just have to play with it. DS alone you'll have to hug a tree or pilling to see the distance between passing and shown. Good excuse to go to the lake,go play with it man!
