Howdy folks!

A buddy and I were talking the other day about the need for a cell phone app that could serve as a GPS/depth finder. Lo and behold, it exists as this:

http://www.fishhunter.com/home/

Do ya'll think this is a gimmick or the real deal? It sure would be convenient for putting on my boat. Also, it'd be a lot cheaper! One of the model's looks like it even has so sort of side scan.

I have it, been doing a review on it whenever I take it out. Here's what I got so far...

The 3D model has 5 transponders on it. Will give you pics of the side if you push on it, but only one angle at a time viewing. I think it's pretty cool, maybe more $ than what it should be, but built pretty tough so it's durable.

For me it was between the FishHunter and the Deeper models, the Deeper has really good reviews but I was looking for something with just a little more choices. Over all the FishHunter is okay, little touchy staying connected to the wifi, other than that it works well and I bet would work even better in deep water attached to a boat.

There are several wireless transducers other than the two mentioned.

The Vexilar Sonarphone has three versions. I use the boat mounted/powered version with smartphones and tablets.

Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G3N and G4N, 1198c SI, SOLIX 10 SI G3,
Helix 8 MEGA SI+ GPS G4N, SOLIX 12 SI and G3, MEGA 360, MEGA LIVE TL, RC-1

Which ever you choose, tie that sucker on tight! There's been a many fisherman watch as their portable sonars broke off and swam away with the current.

Looking at all of these options is pretty interesting and is definitely making me consider purchasing one of these devices over the traditional ones. I was playing around with the demo for the fish hunter, and while the 3D would take some getting used to, I think I could find it to be useful. Do you know how broad of a range it scans? Some other questions I had about it, have you effectively used it trolling? I want to make sure I could troll it behind my boat with the 3D scan for stripers. Also, for Deeper, they imply that you can't effectively drag it behind your boat.

I'd say the biggest advantage I've noticed with Vexilar is the compatibility with the Navionics maps. This is obviously huge considering what a premium brand they are. I also like that they offer mountable options.

Finally, do any of you have good videos showing it actually being implemented while fishing? I've found a couple but nothing to really hit home.

I use the Vexilar Sonarphone with Navionics to do Sonar Charts Live.
Did mapping with smartphones and tablets using it. I have the Sonarphone and Navionics apps on 5 devices.

This is the Sonarphone sonar view on an iPad and Android tablet:

They were different looking between iOS and Android like this:

Then the iOS version was changed to match the Android:

Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G3N and G4N, 1198c SI, SOLIX 10 SI G3,
Helix 8 MEGA SI+ GPS G4N, SOLIX 12 SI and G3, MEGA 360, MEGA LIVE TL, RC-1

Wayne, can you do a pin drop via the sonar screen? Obviously, that's pretty nifty if you're trying to mark a specific piece of structure. Also, do you have to have cell service for all of this to work and does the Navionics have trail tracking feature?

Thanks for the help!

No, Sonar is not GPS. Waypoints are a GPS function.

The wireless transducers are either WiFi or Bluetooth from the transducer to the display device. Has nothing to do with cell service. The Sonarphone is WiFi and has a longer range than the Bluetooth models.

When recording sonar logs/contour mapping, the software records the track as well as creating the contour lines on the chart view.

The Navionics map software does waypoints and tracks separately from the sonar function.

This shows a track with created contour lines. The yellow line is the track.

Same lake, different track:

Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G3N and G4N, 1198c SI, SOLIX 10 SI G3,
Helix 8 MEGA SI+ GPS G4N, SOLIX 12 SI and G3, MEGA 360, MEGA LIVE TL, RC-1

There are four "waypoints" Community Edits in this Navionics mobile app image:
