I saw at least 30 dead catfish in lake Conroe yesterday. Anyone have a reason for this?

Spawning is hard work.

I was out there today and there are hundreds of dead catfish all over the lake. There are a few dead bass as well. I don't know if the lake experienced some kind of turnover causing these fish to die of oxygen deprivation or what. There are a lot of them everywhere that's for sure!!!

I was noticing the same thing. In our channel this evening I can see four dead catfish.

Its pleasure boating season, I wouldn't rule out a grass kill.

A Conroe fishing report was just publish in the Conroe newspaper. I can not say how much the author knows about fishing and I am doubtful of the reason given to the author by TPWD.

"...Catfish are fair but a number of dead catfish have been seen floating from the dam up to the FM 1097 Bridge. I spoke with the TPWD people who look after our lake and they believe it is possibly a common annual situation, but they are coming out to investigate. You can still catch catfish on the deep baited humps and points in 22 to 33 feet of water and between weather fronts on the bulkheads after shad. The sizes of catfish caught are running up to 5 pounds. James said he has been using chicken liver or Stick-It prepared bait...."

I almost posted this same question yesterday.

I keep my boat at Lake Walden Boat storage in Atkins Creek, and there are dead catfish allover our ramp, i thought it was folks just throwing them out after filleting them, but i realized some were still whole, I was later around the corner fishing docks, and saw another one swimming like it was half dead, with a big green/brown patch on it's back!

I caught two catfish today on a crankbait. The first one only had one eye. The second one looked like it came straight from The Walking Dead. Scattered dead catfish almost everywhere I fished.

I saw a lot less yesterday but there are still a few scattered around the lake.
