What is the best way to remove the finish from old baits if I want to re-paint them? Does airplane remover hurt the plastic baits? I sanded a Bagley's this weekend, and would be afraid to use a chemical stripper on a wooden bait. I would hate to get chemicals into the wood that you could never get back out, so I am thinking sanding those are the only way to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hand sand or use a sand blasting cabinet to remove the hard finish, prime or base coat, paint away, clear coat. you can also use an air eraser. it's an airbrush designed for etching, cleaning small parts or removing finish from baits. harbor freight has them for $30.
be careful with paint strippers because they can affect the bait.

This photo is of an old floating style Ratl Trap found on a recent fishing trip. It was in pretty fair condition so I decided to give it a new finish. First the old damaged chrome is smoothed out with 400 grit sand paper.

Next step, was to apply several coats of opaque white over the blank to create a good base for the pattern to come. I used Createx Wicked paints and an Iwata HP-CH airbrush to apply the paints. The colors were chosen with a shad pattern in mind.

Once a pearlescent color was sprayed over the entire blank, alligator clips were used to hold small scale mesh wrapped around the blank.

A darker color was sprayed over the back and sides leaving off at the belly.

The darker color was over-sprayed with a blue/green pearl color to give the color shift seen in a shad. Next a line of iridescent yellow from throat to tail was sprayed just above the belly and below the scale pattern to complete the color shift effect.

Pearlescent black down the backbone and around the eyes adds to the overall look.

A smoke black dot behind the head and just above eye level creates a realistic looking kill dot. Holding a stencil away from the lure body while spraying paint thru the hole creates a kill dot without sharp edges. Also, using the tip of the stencil its pretty easy to create light and dark rays along the sides of the dorsal fin.

A light mist of peach or flesh color was sprayed around the throat to soften up the lower gill area and a bit of gold pearl added around the upper gills.

Last bit of painting was a little accent of burnt orange at the very tip and tail of the lure.

Finally, to create the flash that shad produce under sunlight Holographic glitter was liberally sprayed from back to belly down both sides and silver/black oversized eyes were attached and sealed using nail polish. A very thin coat of two part epoxy was brushed over the lure...not too thick its a floating Ratl Trap. Fifteen minutes rotating and then an hour in the dehydrator should get it done. Heres the finished product.

Looks like this old Trap may have a few bass left in it after all!

Its a series of glitters that are made to be sprayed with an airbrush. Sort of a milky looking base with micro glitter in it. I thin it with Illustration base and spray it at 45 psi with a Paasche Talon using a .5 tip. It comes in a bunch of colors. In this case I used Holographic because of the blue/green sparkle. Hobby lobby sells the stuff. Couldn't get the glitter to show up very well in any of the pictures I took. Using a cell phone camera the pics were too bright and washed out or too dark with no reflection.

Used this refurbished Rat'l Trap on a Shimano Citica 7.1.1 ratio reel and Castaway 7 foot medium light action rod for the first time. Fished the edge of vegetation growing along the shoreline of wind swept points. Casted pretty well in spite of the brisk winds. Pretty pleased with the results...no big fish...just lots of action all day. Down side...the lure took a beating and lost a little clear coat...not bad but enough to notice. Not sure if there's a way to harden D2T epoxy??

I can't seem to find anything like this at my local Hobby Lobby. What is the brand name?

It's FolkArt brand Extreme Glitter (I love this stuff). Kinda' hard to spray with anything under .5mm so think big. Wally World might carry it....if its not sold out. Local Wally World never has any painting stuff I need.

Sounds like another trip to hobby lobby. I can think of worse things to have to do.

This lure / pattern has been a huge success. I had no idea it would work so well. It floats head down...just cast it let it sit a moment then rip it or slowly twitch it back to the boat at about eight inches to a foot deep. The bass hammer it! I'm covering pre-fished waters and cleaning up, good numbers and lots of action.

Decided to buy several more lures of this type and experiment with the thickness of the epoxy clear coat to try and make one that runs a little deeper and suspends when paused. Ideally it would run about three foot deep and suspend dead still when paused. Gonna play around with this paint schedule and come up with a few more shad type patterns for different water conditions. It's going to be a fun experiment. Keep thinking good thoughts, and enjoy fishing.

Thanks Boisarc, that trap looks awesome. More importantly it looks as though the fish agree
