Hard to believe that only one 13+ bass has been turned into Sharelunker program for 2016. Weather, heavy rains, cool March may be some of the reasons. What else?

I realize the concern from many about the program and the unfortunate live release success from last year, but we haven't seen or heard of many 13+ bass being caught except a couple from Toledo Bend and Camelot Bell.

Past time for the big girls.

At least one from Rayburn, probably more. Fork is not having a good year, that fishery has been damaged. I'm not saying it won't recover, but it's not in a good spot at the moment. In any case that fishery has historically produced almost half the fish in the program. Also.... Unfortunately, I think folks have lost faith in the program. The broken jaw syndrome that developed last year hasn't helped. If a guy catches the fish of a lifetime and then it dies in captivity, he runs the risk of getting blamed for roughing it up. In some folks eyes it might not be worth it. It's sad in my opinion, because I am one of the folks who believe the program on the whole is a net positive for Texas fisheries.

Per reports on here a few have just been weighed and released.

Ray Roberts had one last week caught from a kayak.

I feel like the process to submit the fish is more hassle than reward. If i catch a monster, I want to weigh it, take a few pictures, and get it back in the water. Especially if I know she is getting ready to spawn on her own without TPWD help. For me to have to call TPWD, and wait for someone to come out and pick it up puts a huge damper on my day of fishing and puts a lot of stress on the fish. So even though I believe in the program and I think that it's beneficial to the fisheries, I think it has some major flaws that need to be addressed.

First off I'm not a big fan of the SAL program. . .but let's not get into that whole debate again.

I think the bad numbers of big fish are drought related more than anything else. Those big old bass don't do well in hot summer waters. 2-4 years ago not only was it crazy hot but all of the lakes were down multiple feet and we didn't get jack for rain. That means less oxygen in the water, hotter water temps, less deep water for them to hide, etc.

Don't give man too much credit just yet. This is more likely a byproduct of a long period of hot, dry weather.

I think a lot of the big fish this year are not susceptible to lures. As flooded as the lakes are they can do their thing where an angler can't get a bait to them.

You can get used to single digit years for sharelunkers.. Maybe Toledo will turn out a few in the next couple of years.. But with the crappy conditions we had the last few years, it will be a while, if good conditions persist, before we see many. And that's a big if..

I am sure there are still a few around, but damn few..

If there was a time when you could show that genetics win out over conditions, this would be it..

But it ain't gonna happen..

I have a coworker who caught a 13lb. 7oz. on T-Bend a couple days after all the rains. Took some pics of her on his scales, and let her go. Tight lipped on where, and what on.

I think this is spot on. Are there fewer 13+ lb. fish being caught? Probably, but if I did catch one, I'd have serious concerns over turning it in after last year. A guy turns one in, TPWD releases the anglers name, his name is all over this forum, then TPWD claims that the fish died because the angler mishandled? Lunker killer.

Toledo by far has the most 13+ being caught. They just aren't being turned in to tpw. A few go to Toledo Lunker association.

This is all well and good, but people don't take into account it's an either/or. And, the fish MUST be caught in Texas waters! That makes Toledo only half of the picture. Not every 13+ pounder is on the TX side.

Hard to grow multiple giants w/o water. Stable water levels over multiple, concurrent years seems to be the constant in 13+ lb largemouth.
