I was out at my buddies boat slip on Lewisville, the crappie would not bite. I kept seeing these torpedoes slowly cruising the murky shallows by the bank. I threw my jig with no bites, my buddy said they were carp. So I changed to a tiny treble mashed up stale easter cookies and hotdog buns and cast up near the bank. I caught what I think is a buffalo fish and a carp. WHAT A HOOT!

I get it now. Crappie fishing for dinner is OK. They do not fight very hard. But when I hooked a 4-5# fish on 6# line and a "noodley" crappie rod..........I had a smile that almost split my head. I swear my face muscles hurt today from smiling so much last night.

I have read this forum and always said I will try to catch a carp but never really did. I am "hooked" pun intended. I had a several bites and will have to learn when to set the hook. Most bites I just pulled up a fingernail size scale skewered on the hook or fought them on for a second or two then they come off. I think I set too early.

So is this a buffalo fish? I will keep reading all of you guys posts and learning. THANKS!

Yepper, that is a buffalo. Had to be a great fight on light tackle. Pulling scales off of buffalo on the hook set is not uncommon.

Thanks y'all. I would love to learn how to properly catch em. I saw some HUGE shadows cruising by. Rigged up my crankbait rod last night with a slip weight and a little treble, got 14# line. (not much to get hung on in the marina. I am going to go out and try again tomorrow. I found some bait recipes online and will try the easier ones. Boilies do not make much sense to me but I guess they work great.

People used to call carp, buffalo, gar, and gaspergou trash fish, but to me they have always been fish. Carp are freshwater redfish. They, to me, are just like all other fish, catchable and enjoyable. I normally do catch and release on just about everything, unless we want a little meal, but generally I am to lazy to clean them all and love to watch them swim away.

On whatever rod you use, all of these fish can be great fun. They make your day brighter and you happy you're alive and on the water enjoying the outdoor world.

Last 2 bull carps I caught were huge and reminded me of salt fishing!
Was a hooy reeling em in!
I had one snap a treble so I switched to small #6 circle hooks... still bent the hook all to hell and back but Im not sure theyd be able to take in a bigger hook size smirk
