Cabelas has their Sage VXP Flyrods on sale . Sage has discontinued the VXP line since new rods are coming out like the Approach which is really making a big headway . Lifetime warranties too ! Just about any fly shop that carried the Sage VXP has them on sale since Sage has discontinued that line . Really good prices , $285.00 - $325.00 depending which one is chosen .

The VXP series have been discontinued for a while. I think 2014 was the last year. Anyways, Sage touts it as a "fast" rod, but it felt more like a med-fast rod to me. It's a smooth relaxed caster, kinda like their older VT2 series. I liked Rio Grand line on it.
I sold off my VXPs and VT2s because I favor faster action rods for most of my fishing. The Method series are my go to sticks nowadays. Nothing wrong with the VXP, but for that price range, I'd find me a Sage Response. It just fits my casting stroke a bit better.

Thanks for the info. I been trying to research the VXP and even emailed Sage but can't get a response. Might better look for something newer.

I took the plunge and ordered a Sage VXP , 9' 5wt , 4-pc. When it gets here I'll use the Cabelas RLS reel I bought with the RLS combo I bought a while back. I think this will be my go to setup from panfish , bass and trout.

I think you'll enjoy the rod. Not sure what line you currently have, but if you find your distance is lacking, try casting it with Rio Grand fly line. It's a half weight heavier and might help you load the rod a bit better. You can find the line on closeout online as well. Good luck!

Not sure what brand it it but it says it's 5wt WF line and backing. The salesman at Cabelas said it was very good floating line. I'll check out that line your talking about. Should backing always be loaded before your fly line ?

Yes, backing is basically the filler for the spool. You should able to keep the backing on that came with the reel and simply attach a new fly line to it if you decide to swap it out.
Shoot me a PM if you have any questions regarding Sage rods, lines, etc. After fishing many brands, they are my go too..

I been emailing SAGE back and forth trying to find out which rod was better , the new Approach that is their latest lower cost rods or the discontinued VXP rod that retailers across the USA are selling out for $285.00 to $325.00 depending what size you get . A gentleman at Sage has confirmed the VXP is better overall rod in quality and use . That is great to hear ! Mine should be here by the 4th of April .

The Approach is their entry level med-fast rod made of their graphite III blank. It's a good reliable blank. Don't quote me, but I think the VXP is a blend of g III and generation 5. Kind of a in between. IMO, some of their best rods are made of generation 5 blanks. Z-Axis, Xi3, TCX. However the highly regarded XP series was a g III blank.
Both are good rods, but the actions are quite different.

Sage is saying it's a fast rod but users are saying it's more close to med fast rod. Either way I'm glad I'll be getting it today!!

Got my SAGE VXP 9' 5wt in last night. It comes in a complete carry case but I will try the Cabelas RLS reel . If it works I'll use that , but later plan to get a SAGE reel 2250.
