There are five boats in this back bay this morning. They are spider rigging...just trolling around slowly looking for fish.

I am not set up for spider rigging and don't want to go out and buy four new rods/reels. So, what technique should I use to get in on the fun? Would you put out a bobber with a jig and a minnow? Slow troll a road runner or two? Find some cover and jig fish it?

Water in this back bay runs about three to four feet at current lake level....

Just watched one guy run up on the sand bar that is two houses up River from me. He was able to back off of it.

Sounds like you are wanting to learn to slow troll to me! Spider rigging without all the muss/fuss/$$$$.

Make up a couple poles (longer is better) with a barrel or three way swivel tied to the line, or cheat and get some MR. Crappie rigs....Roadrunners or jigs, or shallow running crank baits (1-3ft), hang them off the side, get on the trolling motor and you are slow trolling! Good luck. If it was me, I would be jigging the bank and any structure in the cove.

I would cut a couple of willows 8' long & sink them horizontal with cinder blocks. To concentrate the fish. GPS the spot and vertical jig either with or without a cork.

If the area is lacking cover they will move to your spot quickly.

There are stake beds all over the place. Lots of them. This is a river. It gets shallower and shallower further up. It widens out in a place known locally as crappie hollow.

I would use a jig and bobber and fish over those stake beds and cover water.

Slow troll a tube jig with just a single pole held in your hand .3-.5 mph. If fish are being pulled by the spider riggers then the fish are liking the movement. You may not get the numbers as the spider riggers but you'll see bites. My wife and I used this technique last Spring at LOP and were pulling fish in the same areas that guys were stationary vertical jigging but not catching.

These old boys up here are ahead of you. In the five mile stretch from my dock to the main river there must be a couple hundreds of stake beds. Also, the state has fish aggregating devices in a number of places. Mostly just sunken cedar trees, each held down by the thousands of jigs caught on them...

Well, if it was me, I would sidescan the area, till I found some crappie on those stake beds and pitch to them...

Sounds like side imaging would be a big plus for you right now.

As fortune would have it, there is a brand new side scan sitting on the console. Not sure how to use it, but I am still trainable.

Which brand / model did you get, I bet someone on here has the same unit & can provide some short cuts to get you up & running.

I bet Ken Gaby has some ideas, he is a spider rigging man, and I'm guessing he worked himself into it over time.

If you don't want to spider rig, then all the advice above is right on.

I spider rig when I have too, but don't like it.
