A buddy of mine told me there are saltwater gators near lockport. Is this true? I don't wanna yak in the wrong area.

There are alligators all over the coast. Most are fairly good at not being obvious. I wouldn't worry about them in the day time.

There are Alligators all in the bays and tidal areas of Rockport and Aransas Bays..They will not bother you.In a yak or wadding.You may never see one..They are there.
IF ..you do see them..Leave them alone.They are just doing there thing.

I knew the possibilities of gators around Aransas Pass were good. I was hoping id never see one or have anyone tell me they were here! I do a lot of flounder gigging at night and the creepiness of it just tripled!

wading near the Copano entrance in 1994 I kept seeing some driftwood that just didn't look right as in at certain times it created a wake...once I realized driftwood seldom moves on its own I gave wide berth back to the boat. Mind you this is no back bay or isolated area...

Just FYI, there's no such thing as a "saltwater gator". American Alligators in salt marsh? Yep, alligators will visit the salt marsh. There is one native critter that's just fine in saltwater (even swims the ocean at times), and it's the American Crocodile. They're very endangered, and very much elusive, but NOT to be tampered with. They are highly aggressive and dangerous when confronted. They aren't named crocodile for nothing! I do not know if their natural range includes our Gulf Coast area or not. I was aware of their presence when I lived in Florida.

I think he was asking if there were gators in saltwater and the short answer is yes it happens, usually in more brackish than salt. In '08 when Galveston bay was flooded by the tidal surge from Ike there were dead gators all over the bay, which shows they cannot live in a pure saltwater environment for long, but they do show up. I've even seen one off the beach in Galveston before, small 4 ft. male looking for territory or lost I assumed, but he was in really bad shape and probably didn't live.

There have been unconfirmed reports of American crocs as nearby as Sabine Pass and they are expanding their territory. It would not surprise me if they started to show up more often.

Came across one about 12' in Cedar Bayou Channel out in front of Thompson's last Sunday. I was surprised to see him out there...

If you're worried about gators, dont ever fish Calcasieu lake in LA. We see them every time we go down there. Dont mess with them and they wont mess with you unless you corner one in his hidey hole. There are yaks everywhere too.
