Can anyone tell me where on Lake Lavon is the best place to use a cast net from the bank to catch shad?

boat ramps early morning or late evening, may not be the best but it should work out for you.

Use what you catch no matter if they are just hookers.

I have two possibly silly questions.

When you say early, are you talking first light early?

Do you throw the net from the dock to the ramp, or stand on the ramp and throw in?

I've seen the boat ramp recommendation a lot and have never been sure what's attracting them there. I figure it's the wind blowing small stuff they are feeding on and the ramp is just a nice smooth place to throw the net.

Early as in before it gets busy being used as a ramp. Or after its been calm awhile. Ramps are usually productive if you can throw the full length of your rope. Just stand where the boat goes in and throw.

Chasing them can be tough but there are a couple of indicators that can help you zero in on a school. Birds circling or perched near by is a pretty good sign that there's a school near. Circular disturbances in the water is another one. It's kind of difficult to explain in words, but on calm water you'll notice a section that's not like the rest. You'll figure out your go-to spots and one of them will usually produce for you each time.

I went to twin groves park on Lavon this morning about 10AM and was only able to catch 3-4 threadfin from the ramp. Walked around the side of the ramp 20yards and caught 10 or 15 3inch threadfin. The shad this time of year are easy to catch just about anywhere from the bank as long as you get there early or wait til the sun is setting. Drove across the 380 bridges and pulled off the road and caught 30-40 threadfin in 2-3 throws about 10ft front the waters edge in 8 inches of water.

Generally, if you stick to sandy banks and boat ramps and get in early or real late you wont have a problem catching 2-4 inch shad. The real trick is catching the 10 inch gizzards from the bank on a consistent basis.

I'm off work tomorrow, probably going to drop some kids off for school then head to the lake and find a mess of shad and hit up Sister Grove creek over off 2756 in farmersville. Seen a lot of activity in the creek this past week sand bass fishing and very few bites I'm betting that live/dead shad should do pretty good in the creek right about now.
