What if anything do you do to clean your livewell? And how often? I always drain it before I leave the parking lot plus I leave the lid open when I get home (I keep my boat stored inside a storage unit). I've heard that some people wash their livewell out with bleach after every fishing trip but I didn't know if that is a common practice with most fishermen or not or if there is something else that is more common. Any advice from what y'all do would be greatly appreciated.

There is a lot of slime build up in a livewell plus the fish usually regurgitate something. About twice a year, I use a very mild bleach solution and lots of elbow scrubbing with a brush to clean and thoroughly rinse the livewell. Really helps when trying to keep fish alive, especially in the summer months.

I use a very mild soap solution only when it looks like it needs it; most of the time it smells like it needs it - before it looks like it needs it.

+ 1...Make sure you fill up live wells and run it through the total system to kill anytype of mildew, mold or bacteria, let it dry and then I do the same thing with clean water twice...As Ken said it really help for the summer months

I use the Clorox bathroom cleaner with bleach. A few sprays of that and a LOT of water run thru it with a high pressure hose nosel. Never lost a fish, even in the hot summer.

Since the zebra mussel bs I haul a cooler .I ain't never put water in my live well .But my other boats spray simple green fill it up and let her drain.Darrell

I only use the livewell for tournament fishing. If I'm going to keep them to clean, they go in an ice chest with a frozen gallon jug. That way, no water from ice melting and you don't have all those slimy fish to throw on the cleaning table.
After keeping crappie in the livewell, I've about decided they have more slime than catfish.

I fish from a kayak with a removable live well that only holds about 11 gallons, so my life is a little simpler. I can just turn it upside down to empty it completely. I do this and spray/rinse it with a HP garden hose after every trip.

I spray the interior with Clorox Clean-up, put an inch or so of water in it and start the pump just to get the interior of the pump and let it sit overnight. I fill it with a light mixture of Dawn dish-washing detergent and cycle it out. then rinse. I do this Clorox/Dawn cycle every other trip or so during the summer and seldom when the water temp drops below about 55.

Sometimes I carry an ice chest with ice in the boat with me, but since I never know exactly how many I will end up catching, I like to keep them alive in case I don't catch many and decide to release them. In the past I wouldn't clean any if I had less than five fish but lately I've changed my tune on that. I like the idea of the frozen gallon jug instead of a bag of ice.

I clean my livewells by just filling them back up...catch some fish...put them in there...and let their tails scrub the sides

Seriously, I have never cleaned my livewells. Don't see anything wrong with it, just never have.

My boat's a '94, and I don't think I ever have either..

I've never cleaned mine either, but I only fish 2 or 3 times a week.

Until a few years ago, I only cleaned them when there was a visible growth. Then 10 years ago, while diving, I got to see first hand what zebra mussels can do. That is what got me in the habit. I guess I don't even think consciously any more about why I started, I just do it.

Haven't cleaned mine in the 12 years I have owned my boat with no problems.
