Sunday afternoon i had a few minutes to sneak out to a pond by my house. I keep all my tackle in my boat by lake ray roberts (about 45 mins from my house) so i didnt have time to go get it. i asked my grandpa if i could use some of his stuff that he used back in the day. after some digging around he found his favorite rod and reel. he said he bought that them the week his first son (my uncle) was born nearly 48 years ago. I restrung it and dug through his tackle box, where i found in old wooden heddon chugger popper. off to the pond i went. i normally always pray before fishing and always thank the Lord for the chance to fish, but this time i asked him of all days, to please bless me with a fish that day because it would mean the world to me catch a fish on papa's stuff. after about 20 mins of working the popper, it finally happened. the fish CRUSHED it. fought her through the weeds with the super soft, 4 ft rod i was using and was jumping for joy when i finally got her in.

Lew's Speed Stick is a good rod! I've spun a few blanks of that rod. Ask him to will it to you. And that 5500C, well it is a 5500C. Great stuff!

Greatness.

Neat stuff!

That's a cool combo....and remember to throw that Chugger in May or June when the grasshoppers hatch out...

great story. Reminds me of my dad's tackle. He just wasn't comfortable with less than 35 lb braid. That rod probably started out about 5.5 ft long and he broke it. Hopefully on a fish or did you break it trompin thru the woods to the fishin hole?

Great story and great looking fish. Frog colored chugger always a good choice.
If you look close the rod is 5'2" which is pretty common back in the 70's and early 80's with a pistol grip.

Slide right, coming in .... Fish On!

Excellent story. Glad you were able to make memories with your Grand Father. Thanks for sharing.
Oh, I still use 5500c reels.

Cool stuff for sure. I remember my first speed stick back in the 70s, a G56XH topped off with a BB1 Speed Spool and 25# Trilene. It was my do everything rod, heck it was my only rod! Caught lots of fish and never felt lacking. Fished Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend out of a 16' aluminum boat with a 40 Mercury. Now I run a BassCat and have more money tied up in rods and reels than everything I used to own. Definitely don't catch more fish, spend more time and money maintaining all that equipment. Leaves me pondering whether I have advanced or receeded???

Grandpas are excellent mentors for guys caught up in a hi-tech world of bass fishing. Everyone needs to think about the basics of bass fishing to keep the right perspective. One line, one rod and reel, several lures will catch bass. Slows you down and makes you think about what is going on. 12 rods, 12 lures, 12 different types of line, X-ray glasses, down views, side views, spaceship boats makes you hyper. Bass have not changed, fishing has changed. I challenge each to get back to thinking basics of bass fishing. It will make you a better fisherman especially when you live in this smorgasbord of the fishing world today. I have caught nearly a thousand bass 7-9 lbs and I can hold one rod and reel with 17 lb strength mono and the lures I caught them on in one hand. Come to our lunch at BP Grapevine April 15 that Ken A posted a couple of days ago and I will show you.
