Looking to spend a few days fishing a different lake than my normal routine, and have done quite a bit of research about these three lakes; Conroe, Palestine and Canyon. All seem pretty solid. Which would you recommend for 4-5 days of fishing, with nice scenery and reasonable support (restaurants, etc.) nearby (my non-fishing wife will be with me).

Thanks for the input.

Well from my end it would depend on when you want to fish Conroe. Weekends from now through the late fall will be an absolute zoo, not what I would consider for a fun trip. Yes Conroe has some good fish to be caught, but it can be just as easy to have a good day as it is to come away empty handed. As well the lower half of Conroe is almost entirely bulkheads and gets what can only be described as "ROUGH"!!

Look up the Honey Hole Outdoors recent episode on Palestine, might sway your opinion there.

Another option I will throw out is either Bastrop or Fayette County, both small power plant lakes with fish that fight like they are ticked off all of the time!

Good luck to you.

Don't expect to go to Canyon and catch the heck out of bass, there's some kind of secret to catching them there and I've never been able to figure it out.

Of your choices I would go with Palestine, plenty of places to eat in Tyler right down the road. Won't have near the pleasure boat traffic to deal with compared to the other two.

The wife would probably prefer the Conroe area. I'd rather fish Palestine though. Tyler isn't to far away and she could shop there.

Of the three and meeting your expectations, I would choose Canyon Lake. Deep, clear, cold water lake. An hour from San Antonio or Austin if you prefer or a pleasant drive to Kerrville or Fredericksburg for the day. And the scenery around the lake may help get the "non fishing wife" in the boat just to see the beauty of the hill country. Fishing isn't that hard, seems most folks figure you have to fish it deep. weightless zoom fluke fished in the tree tops and along deep bluffs is the secret no one shares.

Good advice, flukes and weightless senkos in tree tops work great. You can catch fish shallow on Canyon year round and you can flip the million of trees all day long until you find them.

I don't know what to say about the other 2 lakes but I can speak for Canyon: If you're looking for a fun lake or a scenery lake, then Canyon is your choice. You can catch fish pretty much anywhere on the lake, year round. Canyon was off the hook for last part of 2015 but it's slowed down quite a bit these past few months. You can be a hero one day, then be a zero the next. You just never know. There is tons of shoreline cover to throw at, and if you're a shallow water fisherman then the river or shoreline is your friend on Canyon. I've had decent luck just throwing a spinnerbait in bush after bush. You can also parallel any bank, throw a medium diving crankbait and catch fish. Just be aware that there are tons of pleasure boaters on the weekends. Feel free to PM me for more information!

If I am not mistaken, there is a big outlet shopping place on 35 fairly close to Canyon for the wife.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Yes, you are correct. They have EVERYTHING she could ever want.

At least with Palestine if you can't get the largemouth to bite, you can fall back on the sandies and hybrids. They're biting pretty good right now and should your wife decided to spend any time in the boat with you, that might keep her attention better. Less traffic than Conroe. Not familiar with traffic on Canyon.
