How do you best go about trolling for hybirds?

Is this the most effective way to catch them?

What types of lures and set ups would you suggest trying?

I long line troll with just cranks for bass when I move from spot to spot since my boat only goes like 3mph ha ha.

How do you actually target these guys?

Troll an A-Rig with some 4" Sassys and 1 oz heads. Ridges, humps, and adjacent flats are good starting places. You may have to add an inline trolling weight to get it deep enough, Ron at Nekid Tackle can fix you up. I don't troll much, but when I do, I do something like this. It only took one Hybrid to get you interested...Lol

There have been plenty of threads regarding the Hell Pet setup used for trolling. Simple and efficient.

I will mainly target them. They do not always look like much on the electronics. Sometimes they look like a big rock on the bottom. I will them slab with a chartreuse slab. Or throw a 5" sassy shade on a 3/4 oz head.

When I am trolling for them I use a 8-10 foot fat free fingerling made by A-1 bomber or a 5" sassy shad. But the same thing will happen on the electronics. I will see them and as soon as the bait gets to them normally they strike.

I am mainly fishing Richland Chambers and Cedar Creek.

Hell bender pet spoon has put quite a few hybrids in our boat

Ahh good tips fellas.

I am going to check out some of those older threads mentioned.

Let me ask this, is it fair to say that they will usually be with sandies or do they hang out in different spots?

Do they tend to school up with each other vs. sandies? How does that work?

I think all lakes fish a little different, but on the lakes I fish its common to see under hybrids and sand bass run together, especially in the spring. Early summer mornings the big hybrids and sand bass will be together hitting the large schools of shad. In the heat of the summer the big hybrids seem to separate off and head to the deep water humps while the sand bass seem to spread out a bit in smaller and scattered schools. In June, July, August we almost never catch a sand bass while live bait fishing deep water humps for hybrids. Again, every lake fishes a little different so you have to learn the pattern on the lakes you fish.

So far the pattern on the lake I fish is catch them on senkos in likely bass spawning areas. ha ha.

I got an annual pass to launch at Pilot Knoll on Lewisville. I just fish from my little Bass Hunter boat so my range is very limited but I am sure I can figure something out this summer to target those striped fishes on purpose.

I have used the crankbait/pet spoon some. I mostly use Nekidtackle ronrigs now. But you have to be careful of all those hooks flying around when a good hybrid is flopping on the deck.

I troll a lot. #9 shad raps. Also the #8 in Blue Glass. Rapala also makes a deep diving Huskey jerk bait that has Chart. and orange on it. Works great on Texoma.

I have a set of downriggers that fit in the rod holders on my boat. Very handy for striper/hybrid trolling, because I can troll a large light spoon at a specific depth.

Just have to be VERY careful to avoid areas with old submerged trees.

and rocky points. I found a downrigger on one last year before the floods, that someone hung up and lost.
If anyone of ya'll lost one on BP, describe it (brand, etc.) and can tell me where you lost it, I will get it back to you.

Dan - tough to get to the hybrids out of Pilot Knoll. Better to launch at Tower Bay and fish the humps outside of Sneaky Pete or Pockrus. The hybrids tend to stay closer to the open water throughout the year but you might catch some now/soon as they are returning from Hickory creek. Fish the channel on the north side and you should find some now and then. Stop by my house sometime and I'll point out the good hybrid spots on a map or my FF.
