Fished the Guadalupe River in a couple of spots and the Bluegill and Rio bite was on FIRE! Caught a bunch of very nice Bluegill in the 7 to 8 inch range along with a nice bunch of big Rios. I caught three Rios in the 10 inch range and one that was just a little over 11 inches. Rounding out the catch were a couple of nice Redbreast in the 8 inch range and a nice bass in the three pound range. All of the sunfish including the Rios were urinating while the hook was being taken out. This means the spawn is not that far off. All fish were released. Fish are very active looking for food before the spawn. All fish were caught on worms using both float and bottom techniques. Fish were found in 3 to 5 feet of water holding by large rocks and brush piles. Was trying to sight fish the Rios but the Bluegill would usually get the bait. It was about four Bluegill to every one Rio. A great early spring day fishing the Guadalupe River. It just don't get any better. fish

Nice fishing Chuck and getting trophy Rios this early in the year. When will the Rios start their spawn and nest guarding? How will the Rio year be?

Chuck, how long does it normally take for those 8" fish to reach 10" during say normal conditions. Also is this an earlier Rio bite than normal?

Thanks guys for the replies. cheers Drrouter: With the mild winter we had you should catch a bunch of em. hooked Curtis: The Rios should start sitting on their nest by late April or very early May. eeks Kent: Rios grow between 2 to 4 inches a year depending on water bodies and conditions.(Until they achieve their maximum growth.) A 8" Rio should be about 10" in a year if conditions are good. coolio
