Robin Rhyne makes very nice furled leaders according to the whims of the buyer; very inexpensive too. I have several but need to order some more-p-

Not even going to attempt it. Too complicated. I just buy them. They last forever.

I've been studying up on them. It looks like the first one will take me about two days, the second one about two hours and then after that they should go pretty quickly. The usual learning curve.

The instructions I've read, and the ones offered by rrhyne56 are as good as I've seen (Thank you sir!) look awfully complicated. I may be wrong but I think that is mostly because it is a fairly simple process (once learned) that is just darn hard to describe. At least, so I'm hoping. :-)

This may be one of those extremely rare instances where beer won't help much, which is always a shame when it happens.

I made them for several years, not sure why I stopped. I used several materials, my favorite being duothread, or however it's spelled. You can combine colors. I made some red and white "candy striped" one year to give away as Christmas presents. Green and brown "cammo" was also a favorite. Just set your "leader board" in a position that you can easily set it upright once all the threads are in place and if you can, give it a sight outward lean so the weight spins freely when furling. The hardest part to get right is the tiny loop at the leader end. I gave up trying to form it the "proper" way and just started using a tiny nail-knot. Heck, I still have my leader board and plenty of material, may have to break it out this weekend! Thanks for the reminder and good luck!

How much would some one charge for a 12' HiVs tapered leader for a Tenkara Rod?

for bass leaders I've gone over to braided line. simple 4-3-2 strand setup with my double headed twisting jig.

this video is how I do the more complicated multi-strand ones.. now I use a single strand of braid..

These leaders truly are indestructible but wind knots are a bitchkitty to get out!

Here's how to build one using just your hands and line. No jigs or tools

I just tried this with some 8lb mono. Finished product looks promising but I haven't fished it yet.
Does anyone have a good reason this wouldn't work?

it will work just fine.. nothing wrong with doing it all by hand.. sometimes what you have invested in the leader time-wise is what matters.. I really like my braided leaders for three main reasons.. super strong with little to no stretch and no memory.. the twisted mono leader will have stretch especially when wet and tends to unwind/rewind "spring like" when put under stress which isn't necessarily a bad thing.. furled leaders lay-out better than tapered mono and have far less memory. The single greatest advantage with "no memory leaders" is the hook setting ability that is gained from having direct contact with the fly and fish.

I've learned over many years that line slack is the enemy to fly fishing both in casting and in catching fish.. strong, straight, "no memory" leaders help make strip-setting work better when there is no slack in the line and you can "feel" the take that you cannot see..

nope; it will work; my hands start cramping before I finish which is why I quit making them that way; easier to just buy them as bass buster said earlier; Robin is the man.-p-

When you say braided leaders are you referring to curled of straight braided line?

I've used this to make both freshwater and saltwater furled leaders and they've worked fine.

I use braided line to make furled leaders somewhat like the mono ones. But since braided line is so strong it only takes 1 strand (doubled over) at the tippet end, up to three and then 4 at the fly line end. I make a 5+ foot leader of braid then use a mono tippet of varied length and poundage.
