I'm trying to pick my go to knots so what do you think works best in the field: Tippet to leader I like the blood knot but double surgeons seems to be more field friendly with honorable mention to the double uni. Fly to tippet direct I like the clench, guick and easy Fly to tippet with loop I think the Fordyce knot is also quick and easy.

Good topic.
Leader to tippet: triple surgeons with quad surgeons for heavy stuff, e.g. 30 lb fly to tippet: San Diego jam knot. fly to tippet w/loop: Lefty's loop knot.
Test your knot breaking strength on good scales....that is where the real story lies.

Leader to tippet double surgeons for tippet 8-10 pounds and less. Heavier than that I actually like to go uni because I fish floro all the time. Floro when overlapped can cut itself. With the uni your tag ends (to rod and to fly) go strait out joining the two lines as one continuos unit in harmony clip tag ends real short and add a half a drop of crazy glue if you think you need it(never have but up to you).I like to fish a mono leader it gives me a little stretch to not over power on a strip set and break off. But 100% of the time line attached to fly is floro it can take nicks cuts scrapes and bruises and it disappears in the water. People ask what about drys floro sinks. I get some ginks on my pointer finger pinch the line with my thumb right at the fly and run my fingers up 24" or so presto floating floro.you might be looking at this as but line type has a great deal to do with knot selection. Light floro that 8-10 and under improved clinch I don't care what knot you tie if it is floro wet the knot not sometimes every time before you pull it tight. When I get into the heavier floro 15-30 lb. range I go Palomar knot. It is not a knot for fidgety fingers(say that ten times fast lol) the line is doubled thru the eye of the hook. The two pieces need to be side by side running parallel if they are crossed a hard hook set or run and pop. But if you make sure they are not crossed you have a knot that holds heavier than the break strength of the line rating. I have no use for a loop knot so I don't have any input there. So that's my .02

Jam knot works really well with floro as well. but requires steadier hands than a Palomar. It's just absolutely critical the double line running thru eye of hook is not crossed though with either knot. Either one is going to pop if you set the hook on a stump of a fish!

Yellow Stone anglers performed a tippet 'shoot out' where they were trying to determine who makes the best tippet. Of interest to this discussion, one of the tests they performed was testing various knots with the different brands of tippet. It's a long read but very informative. Tippet Shoot Out My favorites: Fly to tippet, small tippet (6x) - clinch knot Fly to tippet, heavy tippet (0x-1x) - loop knot (only time I use tippet of this size is for bonefish) Fly to leader, 15lb-30lb line - san diego jam tippet to leader - triple surgeon leader to fly line - loop to loop

Mah have to try jam knot again and see what I think. It just seams like it would be pain in the a@# if you where changing frequently.

tippet to leader - double or triple surgeons knot fly to tippet - Uni knot loop - mono loop knot. I tried the perfection loop and it gave me too much trouble.

For tying the fly to the tippet I like the 16-20 knot it lets you know if you have tied it right. Tie it right and it gives a little "click" when it sets. Tie it wrong and it snaps the tippet off. It used to be a pain to tie until I saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vELpoiNAHr0 so easy using this method! For the tippet to leader I am experimenting with tippet rings this year. I like that I can use the 16-20 knot here also..I guess I should say knots because it takes two if you are using a tippet ring.

A uni knot can be used for every single situation. Spool to backing, backing to fly line, fly line to leader, leader to tippet, tippet to fly. KISS

I'm tying some of the aforementioned knots..you know the uni does seem to have merit as an all around knot

I use a nail knot in the transition from fly line to leader. Zap-A-Gap is also applied at this point. I use mono in varying weight, depending on the weight of the fly rod/line. 12 pound test is fine for a 4 weight rod.
This piece of mono is usually only 6 to 8 inches long, and it has a perfection loop on the end of it.
I use a loop-to-loop connection from this piece of mono to my leader.
Leader to tippet, I always use a double surgeon's loop. You can use the tag ends to tie on a dropper fly. I have caught many, many fish using this setup.
Davie's knot or clinch knot from tippet to fly.

I'm tying some of the aforementioned knots..you know the uni does seem to have merit as an all around knot As far as conventional I have 5-7 year old mono for "backing" on my baitcasting reels. I use uni knot to attach my floro. Saves a lot of money by the time I start casting the knot out of the guides I need to replace my line anyway. If you really trim the tag ends short after you cinch each side tight and put a dab of super glue on them it will slide through any guide with ease.
