Best mud or all terrain tire for half ton truck 265/70/17. I drive mostly in town and gravel roads with the occasional muddy pasture.

AT's suck in the mud. If your going to get a tire that does well in mud its going to talk to you when your drive down the road.

I am about 3 months from new tires myself. I would like to go with a MT but in the size I want all I can find is 10 ply. My first choice right now is a Cooper Discoverer ST load C. It is a commercial tire with a similar but more open tread that the BFG AT. I do not need the load Es and do not want because of weight. Duratracs are a hybrid MT/AT. I ran then on my previous truck and they were not too bad for road noise and held up well for 2 seasons on deer lease. I put 20k on them before I sold. They would have gone 60k easily if my deer lease did not get them first. I would go with them again but sidewalls are a concern. The Cooper STs are kind of hard to find in the Cs. Walmart and a couple of other websites have them but Cooper's website does not even list them in my size. Since I do not any serious mudding any more I may go with the Cooper ST Maxx. I can only get them in a E but the weight is the same as my BFGs. The ST Maxx is a real nice tire just not as open as the ST.

I have Toyo open country A/T on my 4wd double cab tundra and they are great! Good grip on wet roads, last forever too. Surprisingly good in the mud, haven't been in bottomless muck with them but I am in black and yellow clay type mud about 25% of the time I am in the truck and only times I have been stuck was pulling a loaded 18' trailer..... I unhooked and drove truck out each time....

it is not just weight but also ride especially on a lighter truck. In a 265/75/16 weight ranges from a Duratrac load C @ 46lbs up to 58.3 for a load E MT. Heavier tires will negatively affect mpgs. I left out P rated tires because I would not even consider.

Make sure you get a tire that doesn't throw gravel.

rules out a lot of ATs. My BFGs throw a lot. After a weekend at deer lease I am chunking gravel for miles.

I am on my second set of Nitto Trail Grapplers on my truck. Granted I'm running a 35" tire in Load range E but I've had Nittos on my Suburban as well. For being on HEAVY vehicles and towing A LOT, they wear very well. My Trail Grapplers aren't loud at all and actually fall between an A/T and M/T as far as Nitto is concerned. They do have their own M/T tire and it's super aggressive, more than what I would use for daily driving. As long as I keep them balanced and rotated at about every 5K they are really quiet and comfortable.
