Trying to get the screws loose to change lower unit oil. These are in so tight that I cant break them loose with a screw driver. Any suggestions as to how to break them loose? I do not want to strip out the screw driver slot in the screw head. Thanks guys

Use a small punch and a hammer. Same effect as an impact

Mine were like that to some degree. I could not seem to find a screwdriver that would fit just right into the shallow groove. I ended up having to take a bigger screwdriver and grind it down slowly, checking for the perfect fit. Grind a little , check fit ,grind more , check fit. After getting it ground to fit , I then put something around the handle for grip an pushed in on the screwdriver while trying to turn it and worked them loose. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Go ahead and order new screws. You know you'll mess atleast one head up if they are that tight. When they are tight they are a pain to get off. The metal doesn't seem to be that hard.

Go ahead and buy an impact driver set. You can use it for other things around the house? Mac, Snap On or Hobo Fright .

This will work. Just be careful hammering on the impact driver. Aluminum housing! Go ahead and buy an impact driver set. You can use it for other things around the house? Mac, Snap On or Hobo Fright .

I had that problem I used a large craftsman screwdriver that has the flats on the shaft. Put a cresant wrench on the shaft and push in hard as you turn with the cresant.

Snap-On has a Dzus button tool that works like a champ on these. If you know what they are and have access to a Snap-On truck you can get one for about 15 bucks i think. I had one from my racing days. Or Sears makes a real short Craftsman screwdriver in 5/16 I think, but that came out of the tool catalog. Not sure they have them in the store. Both have a square shank that you could put a small crescent on and turn while pushing in on the driver.

Always wondered why they couldn't put a hex/torx head screw in there and provide a torque spec... so much easier!

An Allen head would be too simple. LOL Anything that raises costs lowers profit.

A speed handle with a large bit works well too. You can really put some pressure on it.
