I used to be able to envision the outcome of a day of fishing.
Prior to competing in the BASS events, I was constantly envisioning losing to Clunn in the Bass Master's Classic, finishing 2nd.(who knows why I envisioned losing)
In 1995, I fished my second BASS event on Lake Livingston, leading after day 2.
Clunn and I were fishing the same creek, and on day 3, Clunn caught the largest stringer of the event, beating me by 4 lbs.
I finished second.
I watched him flip a 4 lb fish, that came off his jig and landed in his boat seat.
Anyway, after that event, we became friends and spent a fair amount of time camping at tournaments, and discussing the conditions.
I qualified for the Classic that year, and he requested I sit at the table with him.
He told me that there was a bunch of BS at this night's event, and to follow his lead.
He left the table after eating, and when he didn't return shortly, I realized he was GONE.
I left the table and walked out into the hall, and he was there.
He said, " I wondered how long it was gonna take you".
He is, and will always be the BEST!

Richard - I remember that last day weigh in at Livingston with you and Rick finishing 1 & 2 fairly well. So many of us were and are big fans of his. Big winds and a lot of rain must have made Penwaugh ideal for you both considering so many other areas were blown out. I remember you talking about how it was getting harder to see the stumps as the tournament days passed. Clunn spun around in his boat butt seat when it was announce he had won. Lot of other memories from way back then.

Funny, but he and I both discussed flipping at turtles we thought were stumps.

Way to go old friend, you did it your way when most were sight fishing.

Went and pulled out an old pic from a trip we made at Conroe in the early 80s

Those are some short shorts. He could always get more bites than anybody.

After demonstrating how to catch'em around the then plentiful hydrilla beds, that evening he put on a beating on the racquetball court. He was competitive at everything he attempted.

Cool story Richard. I recall you telling me that one evening over dinner at Mosiers.

Greatest moment in sport since Nicklaus won the 1986 Masters, imo.

This is a good thing for the sport of bass fishing. To see a true legend, and ambassador to the sport win an Elite Series event, will be one of the more memorable wins in history. I feel like the majority, young and old alike, were hoping he would pull this one out. The fact that he did it in a way that was more "unconventional" this week makes it even more special.

Yeah, maybe to us fishermen. Nobody else knows about it.
