I fish pretty clear lake that is very rocky and has ledges. I've alway done very well with 15lbs big game ( I hate flouro). My question is do yall think the fish can see braid in clearer water and if they can, do you think it deters bites?

Yes, especially in clear water but if I'm fishing around grass or reeds I try to match the color of braid to it. Fishing around timber I will get a black permanent marker and run it up my line about 4ft and it does pretty good.

In my opinion you are comparing apples and oranges, each has its specialty, but aside from probably top water, they are different. Yes, I think fish will see braid in clear water, you will still catch some fish, but probably not as many. Perhaps braid with a 6 ft fluoro leader would suit you better. As far as hating fluoro, I used to be the same until I stopped buying cheap fluoro, it's very much a get what you pay for product. Seaguar invizx changed my mine and I haven't looked back.

People are way more concerned about line visibility to the fish than they should be. I grew up fishing crystal clear water with 10+ foot visibility. It didn't matter if you were using 6lb test mono or 65lb test braid. If the fish are gonna bite - your line isn't going to deter them.

Two totally different lines. Invizx is 10 times the line that big game is. Not saying big game is bad at all either. I have it on two rods right now. Spinnerbait and a crank bait. However for bottom baits that are being looked at,fluorocarbon is the way to go. I've seen fluorocarbon out preform mono and braid on Belton. That's not even A super clear lake.

I used to think that braid in clear water meant less bites. After a few trips of my partner out-fishing me from the back of the boat with braid, I started using it more and you actually get better action with a lot of lures with it.

What brand of Fluro brought you to this decision? Mono floats, fluro sinks. Mono stretches, Fluro not so much. What knot have you been using? As djones03 said, buy Seaguar and give it an honest try.

Through a lot of fishing I've become pretty particular about what line I use for what purpose. First off I back almost all my reels with big game because there's no way I'm gonna cast out 200yds of line. I vary the amount of backing depending on the technique the rod is going to be used for, flipping and pitching I'll back with 1/2 the spool. Casting lures I'll back 1/4 the spool. Saves me money. I use seaguar invisx on all bottom baits and vary the strength with technique. Casting and reaction lures I use PLine flouroclear copolymer. Only thing I use braid for anymore is frogs and top water. I feel like using this set up has allowed me better sensitivity and all the benefits of good fluorocarbon without breaking the bank.

It makes a HUGE difference on Fork what line type you use for certain techniques.
Even on a C-rig with a long leader you will get less bites if you use braid as a main line. I have seen this happen and many Lake Fork guides will tell you the same thing. I have no idea why you will get less bites at Lake Fork using braid for certain techniques and I don't think it is a visibility issue because I can use braid and an A rig and catch bass on it. I also use braid for throwing frogs but in that case the line is always on top of the water.

Each is awesome given the application and circumstance that only comes with time on the water. Fish on peep

Pros who make a living fishing almost all use fluorocarbon mainlines when it is called for; or, they use braid with fluoro leaders in other presentations. I suppose straight braid in a few instances, too. They are likely throwing really good fluorocarbon, that is for sure. I second the Seaguar Invizx and several other fluoro brands as being way better than average.

Pros wouldn't do it if it didn't work: real life cost-benefit analysis. How many fish do I lose owing to a bad junction knot or terminal tackle knot using fluoro versus extra fish caught? The money aspect has already been worked out a long time ago.

I am no fan, personally, of casting straight fluorocarbon but pros can do it; so can a lot of the guys on TFF.

And, almost to a man, pros understand that lighter lines create a more natural lure movement, attract more fish in pressured situations and clear water. You will hear many pros talk about dropping from 8 to 6 pound test to attract more bites. Here, they have done an informal, likely even subconscious cost-benefit analysis on a big fish breaking off 6 pound test versus catching a bigger bag.

Some fish, I'd say like blue gills, couldn't care less and you could throw a worm out on twine; but, crappie are at least by reputation "line shy."

And, it definitely makes a difference to some fish fishing in saltwater.

Then, some fly fisherman throws a tiny almost invisible bait on a very visible line . . . fish often seem to not fuss over it at all. It looks like a chihuahua tethered to a bulky chain.

Go figure!

Brad
