I've noticed that I never seem to do well on crappie in a creek that has very little to no flow. They also don't like a lot of current from what I have found. In the creeks I have been fishing the crappie seem to like the slack water near stronger current.

Yesterday I went up a creek on lavon (2+ ft high) and the creek is still basically lake with no flow, so I just turned around. Am I on to something as far as looking for water flow for crappie?

Still figuring it out.. hoping to be that blind squirrel that finds an acorn.

I have found the opposite to be better. I haven't done very well in the creeks with a lot of current and have found the more stagnant creeks to be better especially this time of year. There are a couple of creeks with flow that I can catch crappie in an others that I can't. I think for the most part crappie prefer very little to no current in general.

Not sure of the answer but hoping some experienced guys will share some insight.

That being said, I've had similar experiences. I've yet to catch a crappie out of a creek with no flow. I've caught em deep and really shallow as long as there was at least some flow. Even caught em in eddys in fairly swift current.

I think it boils down to water conditions for plankton and bait fish. Water clarity over a foot or so really helps. The type of landscape the creek cuts through will depend on how clean or dirty it is given the amount of flow. Lavon creeks may be the clearest when they are being feed from a gentle flow of water over the chalky feeder creeks. In contrast a lot of "holes" on Lewisville Creeks get real clear when there is no flow because they are sitting on rock and sand and still get a gentle flow of treated release water.

I caught a limit in about 90 minutes right below the Raybob release before Christmas. Water was boiling all around but there was about a 15' section where it was relatively still or had a little eddy. Every time I threw in there I got bit quick.

So my thought is that's an extreme case, but I look for a spot with slack water if the creek or river is moving much. I'm not a great crappie fisherman, but that's one data point for you anyway.

This. I always do better on creeks where it's stagnant water. They won't lay eggs on banks that get hammered by wind and waves. A little current is OK.
