Hi everyone! I fly fished Ray Roberts today for some carp and found the carp in their spawning stage, with some foraging for food. Water temperature was several degrees warmer in the wind-shielded flats in the coves than the main lake. The carp, as a result were very active and cruising everywhere. However, the brush is the real challenge. There is so much protruding from the water that making a good presentation is extremely difficult. At the end of it I managed to come up with one beautiful carp, which wasn't even a true catch because I guess I accidentally foul hooked it near it's mouth. I had another one on, which was a true catch, saw it inhale the fly about 3 feet from me, but it made such a strong run that the line got caught in the thick brush and the fish snapped off.
In conclusion, if you guys have been anxious to do some carp fishing, the flats at Ray Roberts are a great place to go. Just bring a stronger tippet and leader (which I didn't) and a stronger fly rod to steer the beasts through the dense brush. It was extremely fun, especially since it was my first time fly fishing there, and the water felt great (I don't have waders).

I was going to ask the same exact question... Additionally, thanks for providing the tips and a report. It's nice to see that someone actually provides the location and conditions of their last experience. So many times you read about what a great day it was and how many fish were caught, but most keep their mouth shut. I can understand to some extent with crowds.

I'm sure that there are more flats, but the ones I fished were behind the Kids Fish Pond in Isle du Bois park.

Thanks for the help "theflyguy3". If you're up for it one day, I'd be interested in watching how you catch these carp; I've heard how great the fight is, but I've never been able to catch one on the fly; also never targeted them specifically.
I can also reciprocate with some very limited knowledge I have about trout fishing the Brazos below PK from this season if you're interested.

The flooded trees and brush are making it pretty challenging - the "flats" are all over the lake I have caught from one end to the other. I found carp/bass holding to stripes in a flooded parking lot

I am a great admirer of you guys who regularly target and catch carp. I have tried to catch them without any success. It's got to be an art form. Longhair Dave was/is good at it and tried to teach me without success. I have got 3 to bite and lost all three so I have yet to score a carp. Its still on my bucket list-p-

I would take Capt. up on that offer pearow. He is on his A+ game out there and his boat is tailored just for the flats polling deck and all! As spooky as they can be nice to be able to move in on them like a ninja.

That sounds really fun and all Jaxson, but I never can because of school. I was only lucky enough to get out because of Spring Break.
