Anyone ever or currently fly fish at these fresh lakes? Looking to get into a fly rod with 8wt that can do both reds in fresh and salt. Not sure if anyone has had success at the lakes with flies. Never heard any reports actually from those lakes.

Probably a good question to ask in the fly fishing section. The reds in those lakes don't behave like their saltwater counter parts, atleast from my experience. You would have better luck going for gar at the lakes. But if you're really looking to get into fly fishing around San Antonio, then there are much better options to explore.

Calaveras has been pretty tough the last couple of years and that seems to be due to the plant not operating and water being pumped as in years past. Depending on who you talk to there seems to be evidence of that being true.
Used to be the catfishing was pretty consistent on the lake year around, and the reds were predictable as well.
Right now is the prime time to head on up to Canyon Lake and fish the four crossings below the dam for trout if you want some serious flyrod action.

Just one more cast!
