She'll worry any time you're away, and I don't think it'll go away. Sending her some texts, pictures of you out there, or even calling her for a minute or two while you're idling or taking a break will help though. Also, be grateful that you have someone that cares that much =).

Personal emergency locators are under $300 now. US subscriptions are as low as $10/month. If she won't ease up, that's a valid thing to get as a compromise solution. They do not depend on cellular coverage - satellite based. ^This is a good recommendation that the wife would surely agree with.

I am 64 and diabetic (non-insulin dependent)and as I have gotten older I find myself thinking about this issue more often. I have told everyone that asks me that "I want to go setting the hook and falling overboard dying instantly with no suffering." I just hate thinking of being a burdern on someone. I swim well and am in decent shape (work out 4 days a week for 3 hours a day)so not too concerned with falling overboard. I wear a hydrostatic during the winter with water temps below 55. I refuse to give in to age and will not let it dictate to me what I do. With this being said I know my wife is concerned with my well-being so periodically though out the day, except tournament day, I will report in and then call when getting off the water. Be willing to compromise with your wife so that she doesn't overly worry about your safety.

I had a small blood clot in my left lung last Nov. right before Veterans Day, and am on all kinds of meds. for a while at least. I got the Dr.'s OK shortly after release from the hospital and went to Mexico fishing from dawn to dark for 4 1/2 days the 2nd week of Dec. Had to sit some while fishing but no problems otherwise. I also fish alone here in N. TX and always let the wife know when to expect me or if I'm going to stay longer I call her to let her know. I always wear my inflatable vest when alone and have a roll up ladder that I attach to a cleat so I can get my fat butt in the boat easier if I fall in. I do feel that when it's my time to go do some heavenly fishing that they'll find me floating with my vest inflated.

I think you'll be fine. The same stuff that's bad for your body is bad for everyone elses. Two major things you have to worry about with blood thinners, head trauma and massive abdominal trauma. Any cut you may get while in the boat should be fairly easy to manage. I'm in the medical field and very rarely see anyone who takes blood thinners have serious issues with them. Having said that, 95% on the time I fish alone. I haven't read all the way through this thread, but I'm also in the medical field and I was thinking the same thing. A layperson is most concerned about a cut on the arm that can bleed. But that's not much of a problem because the blood is not collecting inside you, and you can just wrap a tight bandage on it. The actual danger comes when there is internal bleeding from bumping your head and you don't know about it until you pass out. It is possible to bleed to death internally.

I fish by myself 95% of the time as I enjoy just listen to the sounds of nature and going at my own pace.
I am 62 and I never take my PFD off while in the boat and I always attach the kill switch to it when moving to another spot. I call or text wife when I get on the water, when I stop for lunch, and when I get off the water as she worries about me being alone.
I am probably more careful when alone than when someone is with me. I'll be 69 in a few months, and this describes me very well. I fish Lake Worth 90+% of the time. One day I asked one of the lake Marshalls what would be the best thing to do if I get stranded or need help. He said call 911, tell them you're on Lake Worth and where, and they will call the LW Marshall's office. He said if it's after hours or weekends, there is an on-call Marshall they will contact. That wouldn't be fast help but it would get someone started out for you.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

Well, my best friend in the world had a stroke fishing with me in last year's skeeter tourney on fork. He is now dependant on his wife for just about everything. Since then, I've fished by myself a lot. I'd rather burn out than rust out. So my advise is get a good life insurance policy, obey the safety rules, and do what you love to do because it's all over way to soon. I love the Lord but I don't want to meet him personally for a while yet. Good luck to you, this will work out for you and your family in time.

Like mentioned before, compromise, take partners at first to see how it goes and check in often with the wife. Does she not like to go fishing? My wife was my main fishing buddy when she was alive, no way I could go fishing without her! Now I fish and hunt alone, just be more aware and don't get stupid, LOL
Good luck and enjoy life!

Been through this with my wife and son. They were really fearful of me going out by myself in the beginning which is understandable. Over time it has just become what I do. Go to Fork and Toledo Bend by myself and never think twice about it. Had my first heart-attack on Grapevine fishing by myself. I'm up to six stents now. I do understand my next trip could be my last but I don't know what else to do but go..... Keep regular checkups with the doctor and you should be ok..

It is how I unwind, Wife goes about 50% of the time and we both enjoy each others company, but a lot of the time ten words are not spoken till we get back to the dock. Your wife has to develop the innate trust that you are coming back.

A set of precautions and then just live. Assuming that you are on coumadin or possibly a Plavix/aspirin regimen. The big risk is not your heart now but a big laceration or more likely a blow to the head (fall?).
- Get a set of steps to hook to the trailer tongue for entry/exit
- Wear really good shoes with excellent tread
- Never take ANY chance in fall situations ... safety evals are your responsibility.
- If you do have a blow to the head and remain conscious it is best to get off the water and around folks that can monitor you alertness/mentation.
I work in a neurological/Head trauma ICU and anticoagulants probably are responsible for half the admits to my unit. Gotta have them though. Also some meds don't require blood monitoring (like Coumadin does).
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

I prefer to fish alone....most of the time. And I am a border line diabetic and have high blood pressure. I don't worry about my risks fishing alone. I am a good swimmer and I wear an auto PFD when fishing lakes that are bigger, or dangerous. As for precautions? I tell my wife when I'm going, where, and an approximate time I should be off the water. I text her during the day (checking in) and I text her when I'm loaded up.
Other than that....if, heaven forbid, I had life threatening accident on the water....WHAT A WAY TO GO, EH?!!
If someone finds me dead...or floating....check my livewell and let the bass go free. Lol.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.
