There are currently several members of the Texas Legislature that are actively pursuing opting Texas out of Daylight Savings Time. If they are successful, Texas would fall back in the November after passage of the law and would never go spring forward again. Federal law prohibits a state from staying in Daylight Savings Time year round.

This post is not about the politics of the issue but rather the personal nature of my experiences as a father and as catfishermen. It seems like every spring on "spring forward" day I see numerous Facebook posts about people complaining about loosing one hour of sleep or having to reset their clocks. I am much the opposite. I am much more excited about the possibility of weekday fishing than I am about losing one hour of sleep. Furthermore, I was looking back through my photos and I noticed that I got tons of pics of my kids proudly holding up fish the caught with a sunset in the background. When I check the time on the photos I noticed many of them were in their last hour of daylight that was afforded to us by Daylight Savings Time. It almost makes me angry that so many people are wanting to take away these great experiences because they have to go to the terrible inconvenience of having to reset their clocks.

I realize that as a catfishermen I can fish after dark, and I often do so, but I find it easier to be on the lake and have bait ready before dark. Plus my kids really do not like being out on the lake after dark.

I know there all kinds of arguments against Daylight Savings. I always hear the expression "cutting of the bottom of the blanket and sewing it to the top". To me this make no sense. We are all aware that DST doesn't actually create Daylight...but it does create opportunities. I can't exactly take my kids fishing before school starts. I don't think my wife would like it if I dropped them off at school with catfish slime on their clothes. The second argument people make against Daylight Savings is it causes health problems. I do not believe this. Go by any track or park and look at about 7pm and see how many people are out running or walking. Count the number of kids in the playground. How many of these kids would be on the playground if it was dark? The bottom line is kids spend way too much time indoors in front of the TV and not enough time outdoors. Getting rid of DST would mean 239 less hours of daylight for these kids to get outside and play, fish, or exercise.

I have the information of the particular State Rep who is proposing to end DST, but I am not going to post it here. I don't want this to get pushed to the Bunker. If anyone wants the info they can PM me.

Here is one picture of my daughter holding up a nice blue cat she caught a little after 8pm last May. This time would surely be dark if it Daylight Savings Times did not exist in Texas.

All the catfish I ever caught didn't care what time it was and none of them ever had a watch on.
It's not nice to fool mother nature.

No one is fooling mother nature. The whole concept of time is a man made concept. DST simply shifts our man-made activities earlier in the day so we make the best use of Daylight for the biggest portion of the population.

The biggest proponents of ending DST are the TV networks. Personally, I am for anything that gets kids outside fishing or playing instead of sitting in a front of the TV.

I like DST. I get a lot done during the evenings because of it.

Well being retired, DST don't mean much to me. I get up before long daylight anway. Gotta tinkle. You know how old men are. Don't want to be a bed wetter just yet. When the chickens go to roost I go to bed unless there is a fox in the hen house or the fish are biting smile

If it were up to me we would stay on DST year round.

Never looked at it in this perspective. You make a valid point. Nicely done.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't we on standard time now? I thought the change in the fall was the actual change.

We are in active daylight savings time. It was propagated to give people with jobs daylight time to work their gardens after the got off. The "normal time" is the other one.

DST runs from the second weekend in March to the second weekend in November. Hence the Spring Forward and Fall Back. It has been the law of the land in most every state since 1966 and was adopted in many states decades before. The idea is to move the clock forward so there is less daylight before school and work and more time after the school / work day for things like fishing. Civil twilight occurs at about 8pm tonight. If Texas "opted out" of DST it would be getting dark at 7pm tonight. It is also useful to note that we would be on a different time than our neighbors such as Oklahoma.

Generally people that work regular 8 - 5 PM jobs and people with school age children love DST. For me it means I can get off work at 5pm, go pick up my kids and be on the lake before dark. For years DST has been unpopular with retired people. This is why states such as Arizona have not adopted it. It also been unpopular with lazy people that complain about loosing an hour of sleep and having to reset their clocks. I am sure that many of you are like me and will trade sleeping for fishing any day. I will definitely trade 1 hour of sleep for 239 hours of extra evening daylight.

Unfortunately, it has grown trendy among some people to cast Daylight Savings Time as some evil government plan to manipulate mother nature and their biological clocks. The main reason they hate it is because DST is a product of the Federal government. The funny thing is they make these complaints via the internet on their smartphones (both government inventions). It also gives them a chance to put up trendy internet memes featuring an Native American talking about blankets. Personally I wish they would stop complaining and start fishing.
