I heard somewhere that the color of the running surface (or bottom of a boat) will scare off fish when pulling up to a BP or a bridge column. Any truth to this? I thought it was probably just an "old wive's tale" but then again most of y'all have a lot more experience on the water fishing from a boat (I've only had a boat a few years). If it does make a difference, what color(s) works best and which color(s) scare off the fish?

I doubt it will scare them as much as the enormous amount of noise that your trolling motor makes.

Consider that the BP is their home. You can't pull any boat up to a BP without the fish knowing you're there. If it's daylight, the boat makes a dark spot in the water no matter the color of the bottom. As Jacob said regarding the TM, no matter how quite the motor is, the prop makes noise. I've never heard of the color of the boat bottom running the fish off the BP. You can make enough noise to scare them and they won't bite but they usually just hold tighter to the BP. I suppose you could make enough noise to run them off, but I doubt boat color matters.

That's what I was thinking too. It doesn't help either that my M-K Terrova trolling motor makes a very, very loud noise when turning to the left (but quite turning to the right).

The boat actually produces a live pressure wave that is similar to low frequency sound. If there is any movement to the boat, like wave action ,causing a slight up and down motion it take pressure equal to the boats weight to move it upward.Add electronics that sound like a bullhorn to fish and you have another home invasion. If you were to downsize to a kayak etc, the pressure wave is more closely related to flotsam like a log.
As far as color goes, anything that actually blocks the light from penetrating is a minor positive if pretty much motionless, particularly for crappie. They will typically hunt from the shade to the light. The most effective presentation is usually at/near the edge of the shadow on vertical structure.
The noises we hear are not the same as the pressure waves created by the spinning TM props or lines dropping into the water. But no matter which noise you make, they actually hear it a lot and it can affect their short term behavior, but if they are feeding, they will still bite.
I am reluctant to admit in public that when I was a kid, I actually painted a large "school" of minnows on the bottom of my pirogue to attract fish.
Tight lines, Phill
