 Fishing The rigs for tuna at night with no moom verse full moon.

I am planning to fish for tuna soon and began exploring what boat I may choose to do so. Last year I went on a great trip via The Galveston boat. I understood from them that the best fishing is when the there is no moon. All of their trips were scheduled close to this moon phase that year. This year, I note they have scheduled times other than that including several full moon times. I find this curious. Does any one have a thought about this in terms of this. Is it a new strategy. did they decided that the moon phase is just not that important. Or perhaps they had little choice; it was simply logistics.

Mostly logistics, but no moon phase is 100% the best one. There are always exceptions to the rule. Capt Matt discusses that in the thread about their trips.

Others have more experience than me but I believe when there is a full moon the bait fish will be more scattered. The rigs are all lit up at night so if there is no moon then bait fish will congregate near the rigs. Bait fish = predators = happy tuna fishermen. No moon means the tuna will hopefully be more concentrated near the rigs. As a business a fishing charter will fish whenever it has paying customers. There are many factors that lead to fishing success so the moon phase is but one thing to consider. Weather, water temperature, etc. I'm sure plenty of fish are still caught during a full moon but you may increase your odds if you have the luxury of scheduling a trip around the moon phase.
