One of the guys in our club asked if Lake Fannin would be a good place for us to take our Yaks & little boats? Has anyone been up there recently?

Thanks man, we have fished Lake Bonham a few times, we're looking for a few out of the way places where the big boat tourneys won't go since there are a few more younger yakers in our group.

Try lake Crockett or lake coffee mill just north east of bonham. Done really well on lake Crockett in the past

Fannin is good for the yak community for sure, I second Coffee Mill and Crockett.

Fannin lake is shallow enough that for most of the summer power boats simply can't get around with the vegetation that comes almost to the surface, I cannot use my Hobie there when it is thick, but do take my canoe a time or two a year.

I loved, fished and squirrel hunted Coffee mill for 30 years and gave up on it 10 years ago when the drug dealers using the campground got too prevalent and bold. I made 3 trips in one month where handguns were laying on the hoods of cars while they "did business". It might be better now. On my last trip one of the residents on the south side of the lake shot ( with a deer rifle ) and killed a man in his front yard that was ripping his truck off and the sheriff did not even send anyone out until mid morning the next morning. It was Christmas Eve.

That being said it is my favorite crappie lake in Texas and provided me with my PB crappie. They drained the lake in the early 90's and did work on the dam. While it was empty, they pushed windrows of brush into a row about 75 feet from the bank on the left going from the boat ramp to the dam. I have limited on that brushpile several times in a 25' circle. There was a lot of large timber in the pile so I suspect there is still some structure left over from it even this late. I have limited on crappie and squirrels int he same day multiple times. I am very tempted to give it a try again, but certainly wouldn't go alone any more.

Last time I yak fished Lake Fanin was about a year ago - and had gone there a few times before that. Always caught lots of small bass - just fun to fish with light tackle, and yes lots of grass. However, I tried to go there last fall and the road was blocked due to the summer rains that had washed it out, so don't know if it has been repaired yet. Crockett has always produced - I fish it about a dozen times each year and when the spawn is on, a yak is the only way to go because you can get right up into the thick vegetation. Early summer when the lilly pads are out is a blast but year before last they drained that lake to kill off the vegetation and I think they sprayed it too and last year there wasn't near the lilly pads as in previous years so I didn't think the summer fishing was as good. I have never camped at Crocket but the camp grounds look nice. Haven't done much on Coffee Mill as I understand it's more for crappie or cat fishing. Lake Bonham same way, but I'm sure black bass can be good on either, I just haven't focused on those lakes as much. But I'd love to hit Coffee Mill and take a shot at those crappie!

Thanks guys, I've fished Bonham several times & even Coffee Mill a time or two but never Crockett. We're going to take the little boats & the yaks out this spring & try both Fannin & Crockett, wish us luck.

Carver - I have a story about the drug dealers & the druggies on Coffee Mill that's too long to tell here but in my 20+ yrs of carrying Coffee Mill is the only place that I was worried enough for my safety & the safety of the kids that I had to pull my concealed carry weapon for protection. I had back to back incidences there while camping at 2 & 3 o'clock in the morning with dealers &/or druggies COMING INTO OUR CAMPSITE. It's sad, because I really like taking the kids camping there, but I'll never camp there again.
