I am about to buy an expensive reel for the first time. Up til now Ive been bass fishing with $50 reels (abu black max, h20 mettle). I am looking to buy something like a shimano curado or a similar reel around the $150-$200 mark.

So, which fishing technique would benefit most by using a better reel? Gear ratio I get will depend on which technique I should use it for, but it will be a 6:3- 7.1 (Im not fond of the really slow or super fast speeds) The main baits I fish with are spinner bait, chatterbait, texas rig, ratltrap, shallow crankbaits, lighter weight carolina rigs, jigs

Will be matched up with one of these rods.

Hendrix 6'6" medium action spinnerbait rod
GLoomis E6X 853C 7'1" MH-XF
Shimano crucial 7' CRC70MH MH-F
Berkley Lightning Rod 7' MH-F (more like a Heavy action though)

What technique do you do the most or the majority of the time? Which everone it is than buy a reel to match it. Personally I have my three Revo SX on my worm rods. I use them almost 75% of the time I fish. It does not make sense to go buy an expensive reel than put it on a rod designed for something you never do. I would buy a 6.3 to 1 gear ratio.

Although I use an expensive Shimano spinning reel, Shimano has some inexpensive models for finesse fishing that would do almost the exact same job, so this isn't as much an issue with spinning reels as it is with bait casters.

For a bait caster, CCCL is spot on that if you are going to do a particular presentation 75% of the time, that's where you want to spend "up" a bit on your equipment.

All this aside with no bias toward one presentation, what makes most sense, in general, would be to invest in a high-end bait caster for applications where you are casting a lot, casting far and casting for accuracy.

This would be the place to spend more money to get a reel that differentiates itself from lesser reels. You'll benefit all day long from dozens or even hundreds of casts compared to soaking a worm where you cast much less often.

Let us know what you get!

Brad

I havent fished with a LEws but have handled several different models in the stores and havent cared for them. Maybe its different once you get them on a rod and fish with them. On the other hand, the curado and citica both have felt great in my hand while handling them in the store.

As for what technique I fish most, it would probably be a tie between spinnerbait/chatterbait, texas rigged brush hog, and ratltrap. Crankbait a little less than these and I throw a carolina rig and jig far less often.

I use a medium light spinning rod for weightless worms and other lightweight finesse fishing.

IMO Spinnerbait. Accuracy counts.

You can C-Rig, A-Rig, Pitch a jig or crankbait with anything.

With a spinnerbait you're usually chucking into cover.

I think you should buy a 6.3:1 and use it for whatever you do most. 6.3:1 is the most versatile. The 7 is really too fast for cranking and too fast for a chatter bait in my opinion.
