First time out at Lavon...

Skunked at Tickey Creek Park - 1:30 pm - fishing off the East bank, not too windy but waves were coming in pretty good. Baits: Secret 7, chicken soaked in Dead Red, and frozen shad. Nothing for 2 hours, not even a nibble.

Moved to Brockdale Trail Head - 4 pm - about 200 feet down from the boat ramp, really windy. Again, Secret 7, chicken, and shad...Nothing for an hour and finally landed a 5 lb. carp on the chicken. Would've cut up the carp for bait but it was getting dark so I headed home.

Any advice on better locations or better baits for Lavon?

Might have to go back to White Rock for consistent catfishing...especially tomorrow if it rains!

Thanks in advance for any help...

Go below the dam?! Really the only advice I have or find a creek? Looks like the 380 bridges and the dam will be the only fish able areas for a while after the rains flood the creeks? I always try to find fresh bait, even minnows.

Don't feel bad the wind made it tough. I fished Mallard thinking I would be out of wind enough for my kayak, not! Found lots of bait but only one blue. Got tiered of the wind and gave up after a couple of hours.

Common carp 26
Goldfish 9.78lb
Mirror Koi 14lb
Koi 16lb
Channel Catfish 26lbs
Blue Cat 30lb

"better baits" are going to increase your chances of catching fish no matter where you are. Now that doesn't mean its going to make the difference between a 100lbs stringer and being skunked but it will definitely help.

I think 95% of people on this forum will agree that FRESH shad is the best overall bait for catfish in almost all situations. With that being said certain cat species do have preferences. For example, flatheads prefer LIVE food, what type of bait fish isn't as important as the fact that they are alive. Live bluegill is probably the most popular for flatheads (speculating here). Shad don't stay alive very long no matter how you hook them (the majority of the time). I've kept bluegill alive on the hook for several hours before.

If you're targeting channels, punch bait and chicken liver are two of the best (along with cut shad).

I cant really help with Lavon specifics, only been there a few times. But using a guide is a great way to gain knowledge about any given lake. They will usually answer any of your questions.

As far as bank fishing, if there is no wind I typically don't bother going unless I don't care about catching fish and just want to relax. If there is wind, you want the wind at your face. The shad will be on the wind blown banks which will draw in the cats.

You are not alone!! I hit Clear Lake area, and two areas behind some houses on the upper east side of the lake that day and only had one hit but didnt take it! I decided to go to the spillway and hit the creek but only caught a few bass. The wind was ruff sunday!
