We'll sort of...dropped by yesterday to look things over. What I saw disappointed me, no edge cover whatsoever, Historically, NM has 10 yards of edge cover around the lake...which is what makes it such a good crappie fishing like, especially during the spawn. The edge was totally devoid of cover.

Also, at Liberty Hill, the Marina is closed, the crappie point dock is closed, one of the launches is closed, and the courtesy launch docks are either gone or closed for repairs (no personnel are working on them either). Clean up crews are working on driftwood, which is stacked everywhere. The lake parks (only Liberty hill and Oak are open) looked like ghost towns relative to prior years. It's going to be a while (a year or two) before they get this mess cleaned up from all the parks, and get them opened for business.

I didn't see or hear any boats on the lake, though it was windy...

I talked to the gate attendant At Liberty Hill for a good bit. She said it will be a while before any of the courtesy docks are repaired (useable) and had no firm date for the marina being opened, let alone the fishing pier/boat docks at the marina. Then she shared some high water pictures...crazy is all I can say.

Saddened, I am thinking I may just spend my time elsewhere during the spawn and maybe give it a try after Memorial Day, or next year.

Some friends and I hit the lake last Friday and Saturday. 1 fish between 2 boats. Awful situation for such a beautiful park and lake. I'm with crapicat and will most likely give it another year before going back.

The folks at the gate at Oak Park said the ones fishing for crappie are catching dinks with 1 keeper all day.
This ain't good for the home team.....
They did get the dock at the ramp in Oak Park fixed and open.. That is a plus.....

Crappie fishing... what else is there ??

The engineers did a wonderful job building the lake. They designed it to hold water back until the lakes/rivers below it could subside enough to prevent worse/uncontrollable flooding downstream. This lake and the corps managed to limit the downstream flooding by holding excess water back, which is their first priority. Mission accomplished. However, as DW and Keith pointed out, it will be a while before the fishery and the parks return to normal. First the vegetation has to re-establish, to support the micro organisms necessary to allow the regrowth of the fishery. Hopefully, the flooding will not set the lake back multiple years, but it is entirely possible, even probable given the long time frame the water was contained. As I recall, the gate attendant mentioned something about a 500 year occurrence that had occurred.

I went wed., started at the tin horn, guys were saying it was slow. they said the day before they caught 11 fairly quickly then it shut off. I caught two at the tinhorn. left there walked through the woods by entrance to wolf park. fished the first creek got 2 more. crossed went to the middle creek and got 2. came back through fished the first creek again caught 2 more. left there and stopped at the tin horn once more caught 3. ended the day with 11. it was an all day adventure, however every fish was tight to the bank, most were males with their tuxes on. Went today, didnt fish near as hard, fished the water plant, tin horn, and first creek, didnt bother to cross, one dink. Checked out chambers creek it was dead too, as well as mattie caston at r.c. and i had some people checking halbert...nothing nothing nothing

Went to NM this morning because COE said Crappie Point was open when I called them yesterday. Pretty disappointed when I found out it was blocked off. Talked to Elmo at the marina and he said he may be open late April. He needs to build a ramp to get to the marina so he can get welders to make repairs. Oh well. We went over to the COE/Oak Park side and checked out the dam area. Saw a couple of guy below the dam but decided not to to try it. Went to the park and found out the fishing dock was repaired. Maybe this was they dock they thought I asked about. Fished it for a while but we were skunked. Oh well..

That is a lot of hiking and a lot of fishing territory you covered for eleven fish...but I have done the same trip and not managed 11, more times than I care to count...Its faster to travel to those areas in a boat then get out and fish...but can't always do that depending on the weather...personally, I like it when you only have to go to one spot and not have to move on...but I'm not confident that is gonna happen for a while...

This was Fridays catch @ NM. Had about 5 other dinks. Caught them in 20' of water about 5-8' down on minnow tipped jigs. Blue and White swirl tails.

Crapicat...you know how that fever is...and i sold all but my two man boat...so patting my feet gets me by, I think of it as exercise. But sure wish I didn't have to cover so much ground either, unfortunately you're probably right it will be some time. I'll be sitting here waiting on them....i'd rather be a month early than a minute late

I was afraid of this, they might come back though, back in 2007-2008 when belton flooded hand held water for several months there was was a ring of dead oaks around the lake for 12 months after water subsided but some of them eventually came back. Its like they just went dormant for awhile.
