I know this isn't Louisiana, but I'm trying to purchase a boat from Louisiana. Please move this thread if there's a better place for this question.

My seller doesn't have a title for his boat and motor, he's saying that Louisiana doesn't require a physical title if the boat has never had a lien on it, which this one hasn't. I called a finance place in Louisiana and they said the same thing.

Does anyone know if this is true? I can't find a link explaining this to send to my bank.

I have bought a couple boats from La. Just go by a Texas Parks&Wildlife office. They will answer all your questions and give you all the paperwork for the seller to fill out and sign.

No title for your boat. But there is a registration on the trailer. Also nothing for the motor.

Great plan here^^^. Always go by and they will give all forms needed BEFORE you go pick up the boat. I have actually picked up forms, transferred the title, paid the taxes and purchase my bi-annual registration stickers at my local tax office at our county courthouse. Very helpful & they do more than automobile registrations. Push the "EASY" button.

I live in Texas, but work off shore with a punch of guys from Louisiana. They told me that they are only required to register their boat, and if they sell it to just sign back of registration off to new buyer. But that's only if selling to someone else who lives in Louisiana. So I checked with TPWO and they told me DO NOT, again DO NOT to buy any boat from any state with out titles. So I talked to some guys here at work, they said all the seller has to do is go the proper office in La and they will issue them titles. They said that Louisiana state is starting to push boats to be titled because of all the thief's going on. I have passed on a couple good priced boats because the seller wasn't willing to go get titles. But better safe than sorry.

Also found this on TPWO site:

Purchasing Used Vessels/Outboard Motors DO NOT purchase a used boat or outboard motor without receiving a title signed on the front and back along with a bill of sale from the person(s) listed on the title or from their legally documented representative. If a legal representative signs the title for the recorded owner(s), you must obtain a copy of the documentation authorizing them to act on behalf of the owner(s). Texas Parks and Wildlife is not authorized to register/title boat trailers, those are handled by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles through your local County Tax offices.
