I have two favorite reels . Lews BB1 on a 7-1/2' rod and a Abu Garcia ProMax Low profile on a 7' rod . The ProMAx is $79.99 . The Lews i got on sale for $149.99 . If i only had a choice to take one reel with me to the lake the ProMax would win hands down . I know alot of people would think i'm crazy choosing the ProMax but it's what suites me best and works best for me . The BB1 is a good reel but the ProMax is easier for me to throw better and farther .

Abu Garcia ProMax Low Profile

Lews Speed Spool LFS

I honestly believe that this is the best reel under $100. I have buddies that swear by these $100 reels. They love em. Lightweight, strong, capable of making long casts, everything you need in a reel, for under $100.

good morning,

BPS pro qualifier !!!!!!!!!!

BTW....had a PQ with a bad drag, carried back to BPS in bossier city,(i can't remember when i bought it), walked in and explained the issue to the lady and demo'ed that the star drag was not working, she put a blue tag on it and gave me the UPC code told me to go get another one, walked back and picked up another one with the code(the guy was really nice) walked back up front and after, about 1 min, had a new one at no charge....that why i shop at BPS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i got 6 of 'em......best bang for the buck..

good luck,

BPS Pro Qualifier has been a good reels for me and my crew, I have 8 and only had an issue with one. Abu Garcia ProMax has been an good reel as well, very smooth. Haven't tried the LewsSpeed Spool LFS, but I'm gonna look in to it. texas

I use to swear by h20 mettles until I was introduced to this Lews. This lews reel is a great reel. It is a workhorse and Lews backs their products like academy backs h20.

Take a good look at the Abu Garcia Orra SX. It retails at $99.99. I read the spec sheet and thought it looked good. Just bought 2 of them and am super impressed.

Any old green curado that you can find for $60. Buy it and send it to The Tacklesmith here on the TFF and he will put all new guts in is and make it brand new for you. He can even send it off to be painted and be REALLY NEW.

Trust me on this.

It's hard to beat a lightly used Shimano Curado or other Shimano Model. Remember that just because they look a bit beat up on the outside does not mean the internal parts are worn out. You may be able to get a used $200-$300 Shimano Reel for only $100 and it will probably last a lifetime. Also there are many parts available for most of the Shimano Reels, if you ever do need to fix something.

I recommend that any NEW reel which is $100 or less better be a Bass Pro Brand Reel as they have a great warranty and quite honestly build some solid reels. I have some Shimano and Bass Pro Reels that are over 10 years old and still cast great.

If I were your friend I would look for a used Shimano for sale here on the TFF, on Craigslist, or on Ebay. There are many good reels that see a year or two of fishing, are still in great working shape despite maybe looking a bit beat up, then get sold online and replaced by the newer models. Some anglers like to always have the newest gear available and sell their used gear for a good price.

Just make sure to ask if the reel has been used in saltwater and try to inspect it hands on if you are meeting with the buyer to make sure the tension knob, line guide, brakes, drag, etc. all run smoothly. I would bring some inexpensive line, a rod, and lure without hooks or casting plug so you can test it well before buying. I hope this helps!

I deffinately agree with you on the older shimano reels. I have some older chronarchs that are smoother than most brand new $200-$300 reels and you can get them for $100 or less.
