I've been out of the fishing game for 3 years and am now getting back in it. I'm looking to upgrade the unit on my bow. I'm a teacher/coach and my wife doesn't work so I'm thinking the new helix 5 DI.
Question is, why is this so much cheaper than the old DI units used to be. Seemed like you couldn't buy a decent DI unit for less than $500 5 years ago. Are electronics for boats getting cheaper?

Not cheaper, they just become "obsolete" much faster now. New technology is rolling out every couple of months it seems. It's like those old 8000 dollar computers. Now days they are a 1/5 of the price and "behind the times" in a week.
Fishing electronics have gone down the same road.

Look around for the guys who are after the latest greatest selling off their units for 1/4 of what they paid for them.

Take a a.look at the garmin echo map 53dv it's a nice unit on a budget.

Just like computers and TV's....when the tech is introduced.....top dollar....give it a year or two...always get's cheaper....I always upgrade one generation behind the curve....

+1 on Garmin graphs. I've got the 73sv and the di and si pictures are amazing. I've heard the cheaper units are also very good.
