I got the email from Bird that states the enhancements with the 2.700 update for the Onix. It says it will enable CHIRP, and I am not fully grasping this. I thought chirp would be a major deal with a transducer change. Has anyone here loaded the new software or can anyone elaborate on this? I'm sure it is elementary to a lot of people, but I'm pretty electronically challenged.

No, CHIRP is software. Any unit can CHIRP its standard transducer (I call it cheap CHIRP). The quality of CHIRP sonar is determined by the transducer. That is why true CHIRP transducers are very expensive.

The Helix 12 models are CHIRP and they CHIRP the same transducer as the discontinued units and smaller Helix models. I have both, have not used the new ONIX CHIRP function, just came out this week. I have used the Helix 12 CHIRP SI GPS.

Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G3N and G4N, 1198c SI, SOLIX 10 SI G3,
Helix 8 MEGA SI+ GPS G4N, SOLIX 12 SI and G3, MEGA 360, MEGA LIVE TL, RC-1

Wayne give us your thoughts on the Onix chirp compared to the Helix chirp after you have a chance to compare the two.
Thanks
