I hear people talking about needing all these high dollar graphs. I have an old fish finder that I use to just tell me the depth of the water it doesn't even do temperature. Just wondering does having one that shows pics of fish kinda take away from the sport of fishing instead of just knowing where to go and finding them old fashioned way.

It may take away from the "sport" of finding fish on your own. I won't argue with that idea.

In tournament competition, good electronics are a necessity if you're fishing in depths over 10'. It simply saves time.

I wasn't trying to stir anything up I have never owned a good one. My actually shows a symbol that looks like a gold fish. Lol. I fish tournaments from time to time and have never had one and didn't know if they were worth the money

If you consider yourself a bank beater, then there's absolutely no need in sinking thousands of dollars in electronics. One thing that might benefit you more than anything would be GPS. It allow you to navigateg a lake easier and mark waypoints (even shallow waypoints near the bank). I know several guys that will go sight fishing and actually waypoint bed fish. Of course they aren't actually marking the bed, they are simply marking a target area where they come back to the following day in a tournament.

How would you like to troll around the lake and see brush piles, stumps, ponds etc out to either side of your boat? It isnt a necessity but it is a useful tool. It doesnt guarantee you'll catch anything but can help you break down areas of high probability to fish. You probably already use a map, they will give you a built in map that will tell you exactly where you are or allow you to mark a safe trail to follow.

I dont think that it takes the sport out any more than tackle upgrades have done in the last 20 years. It really is a personal preference

Depends on what level of technology you want to use. I guess you could throw away your present electronics and use just a string with a weight tied on the end to give you the depth. The multi thousand dollar units give tons more info in great detail.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

it isn't anymore unsportsmanlike than using a boat, or a rod and reel. Want sport? Go swim after them. Catch em like a grizzly bear. I'd also add that "cork and minnows" is worse than electronics there fat shaft. Lol
