Rod--- 7ft to 7ft 6in M/H to H action depending on the cover you are fishing the jig and depending on what rod brand you choose. Some rods are a H action and still have a good tip action while some brands H action rod is as stiff as a broom handle. You will have to choose what you like best. I like a Dobyns Extreme 745 and a Power Tackle PG104
Reel---6-1 gear ratio or higher. Shimano, Lews, or Daiwa are the 3 brands I would choose. I currently use a Shimano Curado I and a Core, Lews Super Duty, and a Daiwa Steez.
Line--- 15-20# Invizx or a good quality co-polymer line, again depending on the cover you are going to fish.
Jigs, I use MPack, Santone, and Viper XP for pitching.

What problems are you having with fluorocarbon? I use it all the time and don't have any issues with it. I use Invizx and tie good knots.

20 or 25 pound p-line premium for me. I get way less bites when using braid.

20lb Sunline FC Sniper Flouro if I'm not fishing a lot of wood or cover.

PP 50 or 65lb braid for cover. Don't know why, but fishing with braid is just more fun to me.

7'6 Heavy rod, Lew's BB1 Pro 8.0:1 reel on both setups.
