Ok, I don't think I have come across anything more confusing when it comes to mapping. I am wondering if anyone has a preference for a mapping chip they use on their gen2 lowrance units. Navionics' website stinks. Are the Insight Maps loaded on the HDS9 good or does anyone have recommendations?

No the ones that come on only show blue. I have the navionics but it's the only one I've used so not sure the differences in others. Some lakes are more detailed then others too.

Insight are ok; but they don't have near the 1' contour lakes that Navionics has. Just spend the money on a Nav card and be done with it. You can run both maps are the same time to compare the two. Select chart/chart and make one side Lowrance and the other Navionics.

If there's a particular lake you have in mind I can maybe tomorrow night take a screenshot.

Grout-scout,
I am just having a hard time figuring out which Navionics chip is compatible with my Gen2 HDS9. There are so many dang options, Platinum+, Hot Maps Platinum etc. I guess I will just have to go to BassPro?

All of them are compatible. They just changed up everything from my understanding; but I have a South premium and a South Platinum. The platinum has a few more options than the premium. From what I understand they are changing them to the "+". Go to the general equipment section and look at one of the Navionics threads there, find Wayne P or WallyAndre (I misspelled that one) those guys know what to tell you.

cheers

The "+" let's you select certain lakes all over the country. If you just fish in Texas the South is a better choice.

Navionics Premium (South) has been the goto card for folks in the southeast but that card has been phased out, as of January this year, by the Navionics+ card that appears capable of having all of North America preloaded (not 100% sure if that's standard or if you have to get a certain one). Its charts are vastly superior to anything I've seen Insight produce and it'll be compatible with your HDS unit. The Platinum cards allow you to overlay satellite images and a few other little features but I never saw the justification in the additional price over the Premium (now Navionics+) card. You're right, the website wasn't the most intuitive.

Nav+ card is all u need. I toggle between insight mapping and the navionics card when looking around on the lake. I use the Nav card prob 75% of the time.

I just got 2 HDS gen3 units and got the Navionics platinum but coming from Humminbird with Lakemaster maps these are not near as easy to use or as detailed as the Lakemaster. Wish I would have went back with the birds now but to late.

Thanks SkeeterRonnie. Nav+ seems to be the way to go now. Now I just have to find one. BassPro in Grapevine doesn't have any. Figures.

Bassbuddy...sorry for the delay in response, just getting back in yesterday from the Classic expo....you will want to run either a Platinum South or a Nav+ card in that unit. There are a couple differences in those cards:

Platinum has 3d capabilities and google overlay but it a regional card(North, South, East & West) so if you travel and fish, you would need a card for each region you visit.

Nav+ does not have 3d or overlay, but it is a complete customizable map card that comes preloaded with Premium level mapping that allows you to simple plug the card in and go after purchase. Once you buy a Nav+, it is recommended that once you get in front of a computer, to purge the card on Navionics.com, and reload just the lakes you fish. When you do this, it allows you to add the sonar chart layer to this card. If not familiar the sonar chart layer is a layer you can turn on that gives you access to all sonar recordings that anglers have turned in to constantly improve and update the mapping.

After the steps mentioned above with the Nav+, both the Nav+ and the Platinum card have the same exact detail level for contours, so really it is just a personal preference from there. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away, I will help out any way that I can.
