The third stop for the Texas High School Bass Association�s Houston Division on Lake Conroe was this past Saturday, February 27th. After the morning haze on the water cleared, the 82 teams from 17 Houston Area High Schools commenced their Bass Battle, as they were released by President/Tournament Director Tim Haugh. At stake was the prestige of being the number one team in the division, as the Woodlands High School and Montgomery High were tied for first going into the event. Other �Bassin� Heavyweights such as College Park, Livingston, and Willis High Schools were lurking close by as well.
Anticipation going into the Tournament was high, as many anglers reported great catches the weekend before during practice. Although the day was highly enjoyable to be on the water, with clear skies, light winds, and warm temperatures, for many reasons, the Bass were just not cooperating with these Anglers.
Talk amongst the Anglers was that the High Pressure, plus the passing of the front so close to the week-end slowed their bites. For many, it totally evaporated their bites, as half the teams were not able to muster one legal Bass, which on Lake Conroe must be at least 16 inches in length.
As with all tournaments, �someone always catches them,� and this someone was the pair of Jordan Swaim and Clint Davis from Montgomery High School. The pair brought in a 5 Bass limit for a total weight of 18.35 pounds, capturing 1st place.
Also doing well was the pair of Dalton Barclay and Cooper Staudt from Cy-Woods, as they had a total weight of 15.83 pounds to earn second place. Rounding out the top 3 was the formidable team from Willis of Payne Billings and Mason Roach. Their �bag� weighed in at 13.20, for a solid third place finish, as the weights fell off significantly after the top 3.
Another highlight of the day came when Tucker Niesner of Montgomery brought in the largest fish of the tournament in an 8.53 pound whopper! Tournament Director Tim Haugh excitedly stated that Tucker�s fish �was not only the biggest of this tournament, but the largest caught in any Texas High School Bass Association tournament this year!!�
Shortly after the scales closed at 4:00, the clear victor for the team event was Montgomery High School. The Bears had 3 teams in the Top ten. The aforementioned team of Davis and Swaim took first with a �sack� of 18.35. This weight, coupled with the team of Tucker Niesner and Anthony Thomas finishing 5th with a total bag of 10.57 pounds, and Derek Pietsch and Trey Dawson coming in right behind them in 6th with a total weight of 10.17 pushed the Montgomery Bears to the Team Championship for the day.
All in all, the tournament was a great success, as 82 teams of area High School youth and their respective Captains got out and had a great time. They competed, probably learned something new, shared time with friends and family, and probably made some new friends along the way.
