I am just curious. I am planning on going to look into a used Native Ultimate 14' kayak tomorrow and am wondering what yall would suggest i look into. I do not have any experience with kayaks and do not want to be sold something that is junk. Owner says that it is barely used and reason is selling is that he wants to get a smaller boat. So, what should i be looking at in regards to a used kayak?

First, take a look at the serial number (typically on the stern) and make sure they're selling the year they say they are. Meaning if it's a 2013 the last two digits will be 13; Read more here.

Flip it over and take a good look at the hull. Scratches are OK, but deep gouges could cause future problems. Great thing about the Ultimate is you can see both sides of the hull easily. Bring a flashlight to light up the hull if you want.

Make sure there are two removable metal cross bars. If it's the solo version the foot braces are fairly large. If it's the tandem there will be one large set and one small set.

The foot braces use a rod that when you apply pressure allows the foot peg to adjust forward. When you pull back it moves the pegs closer to the seat. The spring mechanism on the older models would wear out some so when you apply pressure the foot pegs disengage and slide forward. So sit in the kayak and apply some pressure to the pegs to make sure they don't give.

Other than that they are really simple, straightforward kayaks.

I have 2 Native Ultimate 14.5 Tandems. They are fast and stable. If the one you're looking at has a rudder, all the better. Because they are sit inside kayaks, there are less rigging options regarding fishing, but I'm very happy with mine. Also beware of rough water, since they are not self-bailing like a sit-on-top kayak with scuppers. You can Google any number of reviews.

Watch for deep gouges on the hull or cracks along the inner edge of the gunwale.

I have the 14.5 solo and keep threatening to sell it for a faster sit on top but never get there. Their seat is what brought about all the super comfortable metal frame lawn chair style seats and after putting a rudder on it I won't paddle a boat that long without one. 2 shortcomings other than what Neumie offered they are not self bailing and they don't do super skinny water (less than 6") as well as a true sit on top.

Am i right to think that it looks like a hybrid between a canoe and kayak? It is looking very open compared to the sit inside kayaks that i see in pictures. I am going off of pictures only. Thanks for all your feedback, hopefully i will be bringing my first kayak home on Wednesday and will get a chance to put it to work on Thursday!!!

Yes, they are open. Much more stable than a canoe due to the cross-section shape of the hull. This is one of mine, with a bow skirt in place.

Cruising with the grandkid.

Wide open spaces.
