Prime the bulb and she fires right up and continues to do so until I have fished about 3 spots and/or ran her a while. At this point the engine fires initially when key is turned and then fails to start. Try to start again after it failed to start and the starter spins but just sounds like it is not getting the fire. The next day fires right up and the same routine ensues. I am thinking the coils are getting hot? How to you check the coils? Am I missing something on this one or looking in the wrong spot?

She left me stranded down the river in a tourney today and I had to troll in mad

A couple of notes. I just bought this boat and the fuel has been in the boat since about June 2015. There was 1/2 tank so I sea foamed it and filled it up with new fuel. After sea foaming it the hub exhaust was throwing black sludge which didn't alarm me since I foamed it and it was probably clearing any unburned oil and gas. After a little run time this has pretty much went away. That fuel however is certainly still in the tank.

Had an XR6 doing the same thing turned out to be the stator. You could see where the ignition coils were burnt looking.

Fouled plugs from the seafoam treatment the black sludge she is spitting out would cause me to replace them first.

The black sludge is coming from the exhaust cavity and tuner. Sea Foam will not cause the plugs to foul. Always trim the outboard up a little while idling or in gear while in a no wake zone.

I'm sure that the cylinders were carboned up and varnished too from sitting with old gas in it. Just my 2 cents as old gas should have been removed befor firing it up.

I use Sea foam I know it does not foul plugs that said what it removes does.

Plugs have been changed. Should have mentioned that. They are also gapped correctly now. The old plugs were fouled and were gapped at .050 - .055

Is it a stretch to think a stator replacement is a fairly easy shade tree job?

I have done the lower units before but never been up top. Cars, mowers, and motorcycles are a breeze as I generally do all my own repair work. Is there anything ((special tools etc..) that makes this more difficult than I am seeing it as?

Needing a special flywheel puller is the main thing. For sale on e-bay

Thanks for the info sir. Got one more place I can check here in San Angelo to check with on doing the repair. The first place I went the guy was pretty rude, mumbled a rough price said he was backed up 3 weeks and walked off shaking his head. They apparently don't need any business there.

I do appreciate the advice.

I have this same motor, year and everything, and was having the exact same problem...maybe.

After it dies upon restart and then will not refire, have you checked your primer bulb? Mine would bleed down while fishing, and after a stop or two, it would bleed down enough that it would start, die, and not refire. Replaced the primer bulb with a good quality bulb and problem was fixed.

I also Seafoamed the heck out of my motor one time and it ran/idled really rough. So I siphoned out all gas, put in fresh, and then ran Seafoam/Stabil mixture 1 oz: 1 gal gas and it then ran and idled fine. I always run Seafoam/Stabil in my gas.

If you haven't checked the bulb, do that before expensive repairs. I know it sounds simple, but it was exactly as you described. Doesn't hurt to check that before you sink big money into repairs.

Coach.. First thing I did when I bought the boat was change the bulb as it was impossible to squeeze. Upon further investigation the fuel line had been replaced with that gray 5/16 fuel line that collapses internally so I changed out the bulb, the fuel line (3/8) to the pump, and the fuel filter that was wrong.

The set up when I bought the boat was 3/8 from the tank, stepped down to 5/16 before the bulb, 5/16 bulb, a 5/16 clip in fuel filter and I had to cut the 5/16 line off of the pump, as it was really tight.

Yes I do notice a little leak down on the bulb still but it is still 3/4's tight. I originally thought it was flooding out. When it tries to start, you get one hit of that throaty engine sound that only an outboard can deliver and then the starter disengages. Turn it over again and it is all starter whine. 2 hours later or the next day and she fires up first turn with zero cold starting.
