I was not sure what section to post this fish under since perch are not listed. I often hear people in Texas incorrectly refer to sunfish and blue gill as perch. There are many different kinds of perch throughout the world in varying sizes and shapes. I caught this little Texas log perch in a cast net at Lake Lewisville while netting shad. Beautiful little fish with great color patterns and body shape. I was wondering how big they get? This one is about 4 or 5 inches long.

Yes Sir Log Perch for sure. Not very common at all down in my neck of the woods. I know in the northern states they get to be pretty good size and are super good eating. I have only seen two Log Perch caught down here and both were caught out of the Guadalupe River. Both were also very small. thumb

Well Jagg if you want to get technical it depends on what you call north. I live here in south Texas and anything up from me I consider north. And yes Log Perch are located in some parts of Canada which I think is north of South Texas. They are also located in the east in such states as Ohio,Pennsylvania, New York etc.(Which I consider North.Just my 2cents ) hmmm

Got another log perch today in cast net. In North central tx DFW. Lake Lewisville. It had some other netting wrapped around its body. So I snipped it loose and let it free.

I cast netted one in Lewisville a long time ago. They showed up a lot below Texoma from what I understand.

Is a Log Perch a part of the Yellow Perch family? Guess they would be in the Perch family just like the fish in Sunfish family.(Bluegill,Longear,Green,etc.)

Side Note: I have seen a few caught over the years off of the Guadalupe. Most from nets. Very uncommon down here.

I've castnetted a few out of the Cibalo between Stockdale and Karnes City. Didn't know what the heck I had until later.

That's a very cool catch...outstanding!!

I believe they are a member of the darter family of perch and the largest of those, although still very small compared to relatives like yellow perch. We had them in the Ozarks where I grew up but have not seen any at all here in East Texas. They were not considered a game fish by Missouri...but I always considered them a very cool fish.

and yet, a common "perch" in the northeast, the white perch, is actually a bass...

funny how common names stick. Like "bream" for that matter...
